If I had a bucket list, building an extreme treehouse (or even an entire tree neighborhood) would be on it. I loved being in trees when I was a kid. I love being in trees as an adult, too, though I think my chances of breaking bones when I fall are higher these days.
Recently I found myself browsing treehouses.com, a website that primarily focuses on treehouses in Oregon. However, the site also has a parts department that features the coolest selection of custom-engineered treehouse hardware I've ever seen. Oh, what a new world of design possibilities has been opened up unto me. The company sells brackets designed to connect wood to trees in dozens of creative ways, all of which allow the tree to grow naturally and the manmade structure to sway gently with the breeze. Before you take on your own extreme treehouse build, head over there and gear up.

**Editor's Note: Click here for our list of June's hottest selling smartphones to see how the iPhone fared against the competition.**
There have been so many new reports of a new iPhone lately, if you hadn't been watching carefully, you might've assumed it was already available.
The latest comes from the German blog iFun, which quotes a very credible source "to be taken seriously" ? OK, admittedly, a possible red flag there ? that the next iPhone, presumably called the 5S, will be "coming to market" right after Labor Day. The suggested release date of Sept. 6 is the earliest we've heard forecasted.
The blog also says to look for "two new device types," but isn't clear what that means. One can only assume it's predicting the much-rumored "budget iPhone" that Apple has consistently denied; nonetheless, most analysts expect it's going to happen.
That cheaper device was "confirmed" by a recent investigation into working conditions at an Apple factory in China, where staff were supposedly working on plastic casings for a new iPhone. But again, take that one with a grain of salt.
The 5S isn't expect to look a lot different than last year's model, but it might include a fingerprint sensor connected to the home button for added security.

Sometimes parents raid their retirement accounts to help pay for their child?s education. Some 7 percent of families withdrew money or initiated a loan from a retirement account to pay for college in 2013, taking an average of $3,256 from their nest egg, according to a recent Sallie Mae and Ipsos Public Affairs survey of 802 parents of undergraduate students and 800 students. Here?s how these early distributions will ultimately impact the parent?s retirement finances:
[Read: 10 Trendy 401(k) Plan Perks.]
401(k) loans. 401(k) loans are generally the least damaging way to tap your retirement accounts early, because, if all goes well, you will pay yourself back with interest. Account owners can generally borrow as much as 50 percent of their vested 401(k) balance up to $50,000. 401(k) loans for education expenses must be repaid within 5 years, and you must make payments at least quarterly over the life of the loan. However, if you leave the job or are laid off, the entire balance could become due sooner. Loans that are not repaid will be considered withdrawals and income tax and a 10 percent early withdrawal penalty may be applied. 401(k) loans often have a variety of fees including administration, origination and maintenance fees.
Only 1 percent of families took out a retirement account loan in 2013, averaging $3,952, Sallie Mae found. This is similar to the 2 percent of families who borrowed $4,357 in 2012. Parents of students at 4-year private schools generally borrowed more money from their retirement accounts than parents of children attending public colleges.
[Read: How to Tell if You Have a Lousy 401(k) Plan.]
Early withdrawals. In 2013, 5 percent of families took a retirement savings withdrawal averaging $2,710. The same proportion of families withdrew money in 2012, but they took out much more, averaging $6,542. Parents of freshmen (6 percent) were slightly more likely to withdraw from their retirement accounts than parents of upperclassmen (3 to 4 percent).
401(k) hardship distributions. 401(k) hardship withdrawals can be taken to pay for higher education costs if your employer allows it. However, a 401(k) distribution permanently reduces your retirement account balance, and can also trigger a variety of taxes and penalties. Hardship distributions, unless they are from Roth accounts, are generally subject to income tax. If you are under age 59 ?, an early withdrawal penalty may also be applied to the distribution. Retirement account withdrawals are counted as income in federal financial aid calculations and may reduce your child?s eligibility in future years. And employees are often prohibited from making new contributions to the 401(k) plan for 6 months following a hardship distribution, which makes it even more difficult to replace your retirement account balance.
[Read: 12 Surprising Facts About Boomer Retirement.]
Early IRA withdrawals. IRA distributions used to pay for higher education expenses are exempt from the 10 percent early withdrawal penalty. Qualifying higher education expenses include tuition, fees, books and supplies required by the educational institution for you, your spouse or the children or grandchildren of you or your spouse. Room and board also qualify for the exception if the individual attending college is at least a half-time student. However, regular income tax is still due on traditional IRA withdrawals, and distributions could also reduce your child?s eligibility for financial aid.

The 60th anniversary of the truce that ended the Korean War was observed over the weekend in the U.S. and on the Korean Peninsula.
In Pyongyang, overlooking a sea of spectators mobilized in Kim Il Sung Square to cheer and wave flags, leader Kim Jong Un saluted his troops from a review stand. He was flanked by senior military officials, the chests of their uniforms laden with medals.
In Washington, President Barack Obama observed the day with a speech at the Korean War Veterans Memorial on the National Mall, saying the anniversary marks the end of the war and the beginning of a long and prosperous peace.
"Here today, we can say with confidence, that war was no tie, Korea was a victory," with 50 million South Koreans living in freedom and "a vibrant democracy" in stark contrast to dire conditions in the North, Obama said.
Here is a gallery of images of Korean War anniversary observances.

@PatriciaMazzei Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez , the man who seemed prescient when he opposed an unpopular property-tax rate hike that hastened his predecessor?s ouster, didn?t see the political backlash coming when he proposed a tax increase of his own. So intense was the outcry against Gimenez?s plan this month that he began backtracking just a day after unveiling his 930-page budget, surprising even top county administrators with his snap decision to reduce the hike. Five days later, the Mayor reversed course completely. He abandoned the rate increase altogether, calling it a ?misstep,? and framed his new position as a sign that he listens to the people. ?People say I?m a flip-flopper,? Gimenez told the Miami Herald in an interview. ?The thing is, hey, if you have to own up to it, the sooner, the better.? The Mayor justified his initial rate hike by saying reflected the cost of providing public services in Florida?s largest county. ?I?m a pretty good administrator,? he said repeatedly, ?but I?m not a magician.? When he realized he didn?t have the political support to push the increase through, he cut his losses and acknowledged his miscalculation. But his detractors ? and suddenly there are many more of them ? paint a much dimmer picture of Gimenez?s striking evolution on the tax rate, which will now remain flat and could force up to 400 employee layoffs, 22 library closures and the elimination of six fire and rescue trucks. ...

HARARE (Reuters) - Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe on Sunday warned his main rival Morgan Tsvangirai that he would be arrested if he claimed victory before official results were announced in an election this week.
In his final campaign rally ahead of a presidential and parliamentary vote on Wednesday, Mugabe said his ZANU-PF party was confident of victory, which would extend his three decades in power.
But he expressed concern that Tsvangirai, who is making a third run at the presidency, had threatened not to wait for official results from the electoral authorities.
Tsvangirai told his own Movement for Democratic Change (MDC)supporters at the weekend that although ZANU-PF was trying to rig the elections, he expected an overwhelming victory and did not have to wait for the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).
On Sunday, Mugabe dismissed Tsvangirai's charges of ZANU-PF vote rigging as unfounded complaints of a "political cry baby" staring at inevitable defeat, warning him to respect laws giving only the ZEC the power to announce results.
"I can tell you in advance that if you breach the law and become a law breaker, the police will arrest you," he said to cheers from thousands of supporters at a stadium in Harare.
In 2008, the election commission announced presidential election results after five weeks, which showed Tsvangirai had beaten Mugabe but not by enough votes to avoid a run-off.
His MDC said ZEC had cooked the figures to keep Mugabe in office, and Tsvangirai went on to occupy the prime minister's post in a power-sharing government.
Tsvangirai will address his last major rally on Monday.
TIGHT RACE SEEN
Mugabe, 89, is seeking to extend his 33-year hold on power after leading the former Rhodesia to independence from Britain in 1980 and surviving his party's loss to the MDC.
Although both Mugabe and Tsvangirai have been predicting that they would win the July 31 contest by huge margins, political analysts say it could be a tight race in which Mugabe's control of the electoral machinery might prove the decisive element.
On Sunday, the veteran Zimbabwean leader - who denies he has been receiving treatment for prostate cancer in Singapore over the last few years - said he deserved re-election to continue a black economic empowerment drive opposed by the MDC.
"Tsvangirai and his MDC are shameless Western puppets, created by the West, funded and controlled by the West, and I urge you to reject them once and for all in these elections," he said, repeating charges he makes often about his rivals but which the MDC strongly denies.
Mugabe jokingly said he would suffer heart failure if the capital Harare, an MDC stronghold in which ZANU-PF won just one of the 29 parliamentary seats in the 2008 elections, backed Tsvangirai again at the polls.
This year's short election campaign period has been largely free of the violence that has marred previous polls.
But the MDC accuses ZANU-PF of rigging the July 31 polls in its favor through a shambolic voters' register and a refusal to open up the media to all sides or to restrain security forces from active politics.
Mugabe was driven around Harare's main stadium on Sunday, waving at supporters from the back of a truck surrounded by heavily armed security men, some with automatic rifles.
Despite his age and fears that his health is failing, Mugabe has said ZANU-PF would fight like a "wounded beast" to retain power after being forced into a compromise unity government after the contested 2008 election outcome.
That vote took place amid a severe economic crisis, with hyperinflation of more than 500 billion percent and food shortages, many of which were blamed on Mugabe's policies.
The crisis has eased under the power-sharing government, but the recovery is fragile and the MDC says Zimbabwe will not realize its full potential if ZANU-PF retains power.
The security establishment has emerged as Mugabe's power base, with security chiefs publicly backing Mugabe in elections while suggesting they would not allow Tsvangirai to take power.

Tropical Storm Flossie, the sixth named storm of the Pacific hurricane season, is on a track to head directly over Hawaii, which raises concern of heavy rains and flash floods. TODAY's Dylan Dreyer reports.
By M. Alex Johnson, Staff Writer, NBC News
Tropical Storm Flossie, the sixth named storm of the Pacific hurricane season, was on a track to take it directly over Hawaii, where authorities issued an alert for "torrential" rains and dangerous flash floods early next week.
Flossie formed without a lot of notice Wednesday in the open waters of the Pacific. But it strengthened Thursday night, and by 8 p.m. ET Friday, it was packing 60-mph maximum winds.
The storm was about 1,350 miles east-southeast of Hilo, moving west at 20 mph. It's expected to turn slightly northward over the weekend ? on a heading straight for Hawaii, arriving late Monday or early Tuesday.
Satellite images Friday afternoon showed a well-organized storm with a sharply defined, compact eye spinning tropical storm-force winds as far as 70 miles from the center.
It's too soon to know how powerful the storm might be when it arrives. Historically, tropical weather systems lose power as they hit colder waters on their way toward Hawaii, said Jennifer Robbins, a meteorologist for NBC station KHNL of Honolulu.
"It's all about the ocean temperatures," Robbins said. "There could be enough punch for it to cause a whole lot of rain."
National Weather Service
A National Weather Service projection forecasts Tropical Storm Flossie's passing directly over Hawaii early Tuesday.
The National Weather Service's Honolulu office cautioned that "specific timing and intensity of impacts remain uncertain due to errors in track and strength."?
But it said "there remains a chance of the system remaining a tropical storm" and even a 5 percent chance that it could grow into a hurricane.
Hawaii State Civil Defense issued an alert Friday evening warning of the possibility of "torrential rainfall, thunderstorms and high winds."
"Flooding may occur rapidly and threaten life and property," it said. "Ground saturation caused by the heavy showers increase the danger of flash floods, mudslides and rockslides."

But what has happened to BlackBerry since then? According to numbers supplied by Vodacomm, one of South Africa's largest carriers, the number of BlackBerry owners on its network remained flat between May and July at 3.1 million. At the same time, the number of Windows Phone subscribers soared 47% from May 2013 to July 2013, rising from 150,000 to 220,000. Yes, the platform had a much smaller base it was starting from, but the momentum has clearly shifted. This is the kind of statistic that both Microsoft CEO Steven Ballmer and Nokia CEO Stephen Elop should be crowing about.
Another company showing no growth in the country was Apple with iOS subscribers staying flat from May to July at 600,000 users for Vodacomm. Lastly, Android showed some decent, if not spectacular growth, as its subscriber base on the pipeline rose to 1.2 million from 1 million for a 20% increase.
Nokia certainly has the low-end Nokia Lumia 520 to thank for its strong growth in the area. At this stage, even a low priced Apple iPhone Lite seems destined to be priced too high to compete with Windows Phone in this region. Microsoft and Nokia have found a niche of the market, in one country at least, that they can grow with and at the same time, hurt Apple and BlackBerry. In Redmond and in Espoo this is called a "perfect storm".

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) -- NBC Sports Group and the Dallas Cowboys are partnering on a new 360-degree look at red zone plays for TV viewers and fans attending the game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, this season.
The network will use 24 high-speed cameras - 12 in each red zone on both sides of the field from the 20-yard line to the goal line and in the back of each end zone - to produce seamless views of the action.
"Sunday Night Football" producer Fred Gaudelli said the system will give fans a new perspective on big plays during games. The 360-degree view will debut on the Sept. 8 broadcast of the New York Giants-Cowboys game.
The Giants have yet to lose at newly christened AT&T Stadium.
The system, known as FreeD or free dimensional video, will be used for the Oct. 5 Notre Dame-Arizona State game, and the Oct. 13 Washington Redskins-Cowboys game at the stadium.
Fans in the stadium will see red zone replays on the scoreboard at all Cowboys home games, as well as on the team's local programming during the season.
"You can now move all the way around the play without changing the camera angle," Gaudelli told the Television Critics Association on Saturday.
He compared the view to what it's like playing a video game.
Gaudelli said it takes a month to install the system, so NBC had to put it at a stadium where the network knew it would televise at least twice during the NFL season.
He said the Cowboys wanted to partner on the replay system because the team is focused on cutting edge technology and innovation.
The FreeD system is from Replay Technologies Inc., which has worked on Olympic broadcasting and live telecasts of New York Yankees games.
In other "Sunday Night Football" news, NBC Sports Group said a new bus will travel the country during the season visiting the 17 cities where the games originate.
The bus will arrive two or three days before each game. Along for the ride will be four fans of the week chosen based on their social media activity, team pride and interest in "SNF." Besides the bus trip, they'll also receive game tickets.
Also debuting on Sept. 8 will be Carrie Underwood singing "Waiting All Day for Sunday Night," the show's theme song that opens the "SNF" telecast.
She replaces fellow country music star Faith Hill, who decided not to return for a seventh season.

"For Japan, the Philippines is a strategic partner
with whom we share fundamental values and many strategic interests," Abe told a joint news conference with Philippine President Benigno Aquino after their meeting in Manila.Speaking through an interpreter, Abe said his visit was intended "to strengthen the relations with the Philippines in all areas", including politics, security, and the economy.
As part of Japan's commitment, Abe said there would be "continued assistance to the capacity-building of the Philippine coastguard".
As an example of this, he cited 10 patrol boats that Japan is providing to the poorly-equipped Philippine coast guard.
The Filipino coastguard and navy have been at the forefront of tense encounters with navy and maritime surveillance vessels from China, which claims most of the South China Sea including areas close to the Filipino coast.
China seized the Scarborough Shoal, a South China Sea outcrop just 230 kilometres (140 miles) east of the main Philippine island of Luzon, last year after Manila backed down from a lengthy stand-off.
This year the Philippines has complained about the presence of Chinese navy vessels near Filipino-held Second Thomas Shoal in the Spratly islands.
Japan earlier this year announced it would make loans to the Philippines to purchase the 10 Japanese patrol vessels for its coastguard.
"The Prime Minister and I agreed to strengthen maritime cooperation which is a pillar of our strategic partnership," Aquino said on Saturday.
Abe's visit came as tensions have also steadily risen between China and Japan over Japanese-controlled islands in the East China Sea.
He reiterated a call for a leaders' summit with China to discuss their territorial dispute, and assured the rest of Asia that his vision for a more robust Japanese armed forces would not threaten the region's peace and security.
Abe said Saturday his party's decisive victory in the upper house of the Japanese parliament would help him pursue his vision of Tokyo's role in the region, many parts of which were under brutal Japanese occupation in World War II.
"Against this backdrop I intend to further proceed with strategic diplomacy which will contribute to regional and global peace and security," he said.
Abe has pledged to loosen limits on the military in Japan's pacifist, post-war constitution and stand up to China over their East China Sea dispute.
He acknowledged at a separate news conference, after he appeared with Aquino, that a more assertive Japanese military was a sensitive issue in the region.
"I intend to explain politely so that the countries in the region will not have any misunderstanding," he said.
Abe said problems with China were "inevitable" being neighbours, but stressed that peaceful coexistence between the two regional powers was crucial for Asian peace and prosperity.
"It is important that we have frank and candid discussions. I have given instructions so that the foreign affairs authorities (can) proceed with dialogue without any conditions attached. Foreign ministers-level and leaders-level meetings should be promptly held."
As Abe and Aquino met at the presidential palace, about 80 protesters including elderly ladies who said they were former comfort women staged a rally nearby, holding signs demanding reparations from Japan.

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) ? Liz Cheney announced a core group of state leaders and advisers for her U.S. Senate campaign Thursday that draws from all corners of Wyoming and includes well-known Republican campaign organizers and fundraisers, but no prominent elected officials.
The list shows political lines being drawn among Wyoming Republicans ahead of what could turn out to be the longest, toughest and most expensive political battle the state has ever seen.
The elder daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney announced last week she's running against three-term Sen. Mike Enzi next year. Enzi almost immediately announced his re-election campaign, and Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso and the state's lone U.S. representative, Cynthia Lummis, immediately gave him their support.
Cheney's team offers the first substantial look at who in Wyoming is on her side.
Her statewide campaign co-chairs include Dick and Maggie Scarlett, who in 2011 hosted a fundraiser for Mitt Romney at their Jackson Hole home.
Also co-chairing are Bill and Toni Thomson, who earlier this month held a get-to-know-Liz event that drew about 35 people to their Cheyenne home. Thomson is an attorney, lobbyist and longtime Republican organizer.
"I believe she'd step out front and that she would directly challenge actions of the president and his liberal allies that want to change America in a way that makes me very uncomfortable," Thomson said. "I think she has the ability and experience to really be a leader in the national debate."
Many speculate Cheney will need to run a negative campaign against Enzi. Thomson passed on an opportunity to criticize Enzi, but Harriet Hageman, listed among Cheney's advisers, said Enzi has been too willing to compromise with Democrats.
"If we're going to change the trajectory of the country, we have to change our leaders as well," said Hageman, a Cheyenne water and natural resources attorney known for taking up conservative causes.
The Scarletts, Thomsons and Hagemans ? Harriet Hageman said her father, a state legislator, was a Young Republican with Dick Cheney ? all are old friends of the Cheney family.
An Enzi spokesman said the senator is backed by some of the most conservative Republicans, including Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, and gets things done for Wyoming's people every day.
"There is no compromise on that for him. It's called being effective," spokesman Coy Knobel said by email.
Cheney said in a statement she was honored to have "support, advice and counsel" from the group of 16 "distinguished Wyoming citizens." Other advisers include John and DJ Mansell, of Enzi's hometown of Gillette, where John Mansell is an anesthesiologist, and Lois Herbst, a rancher in Fremont County in central Wyoming.
No current state lawmakers or current or former statewide elected officials are on the list, though Cheney has the support of at least one Republican legislator.
"I agree with everything I have heard her say so far," state Rep. Sue Wallis said by email.
Wallis called herself a "big fan" of Wyoming's congressional delegation but said lack of new blood in Washington, especially in the Senate, is a problem.
Another legislator is skeptical Cheney will get much support among Wyoming legislators. Enzi was a state representative and senator from 1988-1996.
State Sen. Cale Case, R-Lander, described Enzi as a "salt of the earth" fellow who had "paid his dues."
"I just think this effort, to be successful, it's virtually impossible. Truly," Case said of Cheney's challenge.
Gov. Matt Mead has endorsed neither Cheney nor Enzi. The Mead family also is a well-known political name in Wyoming. His grandfather, Clifford Hansen, was governor and U.S. senator. Mead has said in declining to endorse that he's friends with both the Cheneys and Enzis.

I was 26 when I met my husband. On our first meeting he asked me to go away with him to Paris or Copenhagen. We fell in love, were engaged within two weeks and married eight weeks later. It was uncomplicated. We both wanted children, were the right age; he was what I knew I was looking for.Fifty years on, having become a widow, I began to consider dating again. I was keen to meet someone. But I ...

NHS is not sustainable. There is already wide recognition of this and the development of integrated care pathways is evidence of progress. However, the savings generated are limited and the shift of location of care simply puts an even greater burden on general practice and primary care. Real savings come through removing the need for NHS care.Britain is not alone in facing this problem. In the ...

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? California oil and gas regulators have failed to monitor practices used to access shale oil, including the injection of dangerous chemicals underground, a state senator said Thursday, urging passage of her proposed oversight legislation.
Fran Pavley, chair of the Senate committee on Natural Resources and Water, said she was discouraged by the responses she received from the state?s oil and gas well regulator to her inquiry about the use of corrosive acid to dissolve rock and unlock oil in California?s massive Monterey Shale deposit, an issue first raised by Reuters in May.
Industry officials have said that ?acid jobs? could play as important a role in extracting oil as the better-known technique of hydraulic fracking.
?It is deeply concerning that dangerous acids and Proposition 65 chemicals are being pumped underground without any permits or oversight,? said Pavley, referring to a decades-old law designed to protect drinking water sources from substances that cause cancer.
In his response to Pavley?s questions, Mark Nechodom, director of the state?s Department of Conservation, said hydrochloric, hydrofluoric, acetic, formic acid are among the types of chemicals typically used in acid jobs, but could not say how often or in what quantities they are used in California.
?Since the Division does not have well stimulation data captured in a database, the range of specific well stimulation techniques that are being used in California is not readily available at this time,? Nechodom said in his response to Pavley.
?Nor do we have the resources to dedicate to review thousands of scanned documents,? he said.
Pavley rejected that explanation, saying the Department of Conservation?s Division of Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources (DOGGR) has over the past three years voluntarily declined additional staffing resources that could have helped beefed up oversight.
?Unfortunately, regulators have not deemed these activities worthy of monitoring. Director Nechodom?s letter reaffirms the need for legislation to force DOGGR to fulfill its legal responsibilities?protection of life, health, property and natural resources,? Pavley said.
She said the dearth of information on oil extraction techniques underscores the need for the passage of SB 4, a bill she authored that would require well operators to obtain permits before they frack or acidize a well.
The permits would require companies to provide estimates of the amount of water and the composition of the well stimulation fluids they planned to use.
The bill, which was approved by the Assembly Natural Resources Committee earlier this month, will be heard by an Assembly appropriations committee in August.

HARDWARE DESIGNER Apple announced its fiscal third quarter 2013 earnings on Tuesday, with numbers surpassing Wall Street expectations.
The third quarter is traditionally a quiet one for Apple, and with no major launches within the last three months, 2013 was expected to be more of the same. However, Apple reported Q3 earnings that beat analyst expectations on Tuesday, thanks to record sales of its iPhone device.
In terms of numbers, Apple's revenues were up to $35.3bn from $35bn in the year ago quarter, although profits were down from $8.8bn to $6.9bn.
These figures came in higher than Wall Street expectations, and that could be credited to record quarterly sales of the iPhone. Apple said it sold 31.2bn iPhones during the three month period up from 26 million in the year ago quarter, despite talk that the handset might struggle due to increased competition in the smartphone market.?Apple didn't give a breakdown of its iPhone sales, but said during its earnings call that the iPhone 5 was "by far" the most frequently activated device.?
While the iPhone didn't suffer, it looks like the iPad may have been hit by the growing number of Android tablets. Apple sold 14.6 million iPads during the third quarter, down from 17 million in Q3, but said during its earnings call that the device still accounts for more than 85 percent of US tablet traffic. Mac sales were also down from 4 million to 3.8 million, and Apple reported a 32 percent decrease in year-on-year iPod sales.
Apple CEO Tim Cook remained optimistic, saying in a statement, "We are especially proud of our record June quarter iPhone sales of over 31 million and the strong growth in revenue from iTunes, Software and Services,.
We are really excited about the upcoming releases of iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks, and we are laser-focused and working hard on some amazing new products that we will introduce in the fall and across 2014.?
Apple said it expects fourth quarter 2013 revenues to come in between $34bn and $37bn.??

Spencer's proposed space super yacht Destiny is designed to cruise in Earth's orbit, offering a striking view of our planet. In illustrations, the 300-foot-long ship cuts a remarkable profile?its bulbous body seems almost butterfly-like, with its four sails outstretched like wings in midflight. Like PayPal Galactic, Destiny is an idea for a market that doesn't exist yet. Still, this image of Destiny offers a glimpse into John Spencer's vision of spacefaring luxury, one he's been working toward for decades.
"We're getting into things that have probably never ever been thought of before from a real world perspective," he says. "All the things we take for granted we have to redesign."
For Destiny, this includes how the beds will be designed to prevent passengers from drifting away in their sleep, and how dining rooms will be laid out so food won't float away. Even the material Destiny will be made of has yet to be invented. While many of his designs seem to be far-fetched today, Spencer is hopeful that the space yacht will be real and in orbit within 15 years.
Spencer, a space architect and designer by trade, wrote in his book Space Tourism: Do You Want to Go? that spherical structures are ideal for space because their symmetry makes them stable and strong. Each section will have an interior webbed support that will limit how far it can expand.
"The sections of the yacht, some of them are just large volumes, some of them have multiple rooms, it depends on where you are," Spencer said. "Aft is for crew quarters and storage, front is for entertainment."
In fact, Spencer envisions his space yacht as totally wireless. There will be no single power distribution system?long-life batteries will power all of the ship's 300 to 400 electrical devices. Each water and waste-management unit is self-contained with its own recycling, purification system, and reserve water supply. "[It] frees the designers to get pretty outrageous in terms of design because you're not dealing with strict plumbing and electrical," Spencer says.
As the batteries run out of juice, they will be brought to a charging station by a small army of service robots. The bots will also monitor the water and waste-management systems.
Float Sphere
Passengers will be able to enjoy the benefits of zero gravity in the orb situated in the middle of Destiny's hull. The 60-foot-wide float sphere will offer 120-degree views outward and toward Earth. Spencer describes it as a "big friggin' open space where you can really experience zero gravity" and float around. "Living in zero gravity is the most unique experience you can have going to space," he says. "That's why the float sphere is such a prominent aspect of Destiny's design."
In Spencer's vision for the ship, Destiny's hospitality staff will offer massages, chefs will be brought on board to provide meals, and astronomy experts will explain to passengers what they are seeing as the gaze out the viewports.
There will even be a floating hot tub in the float sphere, though an orbital spa won't look quite like its earthbound counterparts. Spencer's plan for the "Hot Sphere" involves a layer of water surrounding a mechanical sphere, which heats the water and sprays bubbles. No solid outer layer is needed since water naturally forms a sphere in zero gravity. Gyroscopes will keep the mobile Jacuzzi in place.
Why the name "Destiny," anyway? Spencer had two reasons: "It was literally my destiny to work on these things. Plus anyone who is going to spend five or six billion bucks on one of these things is going to have a bit of an ego and will want a cool name."

Speculation out of the Wall Street Journal suggests Apple is working on iPhones and iPads with larger screens. Sources told the WSJ that Asian suppliers are providing the Cupertino company with iPhone screens larger than 4-inches and tablets with displays that measure almost 13-inches. Apple is reportedly testing these displays in prototype devices. There is no guarantee they will hit the market.
It is no secret that manufacturers test a variety of screen sizes and device designs before a final version is approved. In a well-known rant during a 2010 earning conference call, Steve Jobs let it be known that Apple tested a 7-inch tablet before it released the 9.7-inch iPad. Jobs didn?t like the smaller size, saying that 7-inch tablets are dead on arrival. Of course, Apple revised its stance and revisited that form factor a few years later when it released the 7.9-inch iPad mini.
