SUNNYVALE -- A community is mourning the loss of a young man from Sunnyvale who lived to serve.
Hundreds packed into the Marthoma Church in Mesquite Wednesday night to pay respects to Patrick Maruthmmotil.
The 26-year-old died in a traffic accident while on a mission trip in Oklahoma. Three others were injured in that head-on collision near Smithville, Oklahoma. Family and friends say the other victims are in stable condition.
?His job was important to him, but more [important] than anything else was the community he had around him,? said his long-time roommate, Ben Morrow.
Maruthmmotil was an engineer with Texas Instruments. He was well-respected for his talents as a musician and his willingness to help and serve. Maruthmmotil was with a church group helping out a community in Oklahoma ravaged by tornadoes.
?He was on so many mission trips -- he went all the time,? said his cousin, Jennifer John. ?[He was] very kind-hearted, genuine, and everybody knew it.?
His fianc?, Pearl Rajan, first heard news of the accident from a relative. Patrick and Pearl were set to get married next July.
?I had to switch planning for a wedding to planning for a funeral,? Rajan said.
Maruthmmotil?s parents live in the United Arab Emirates. Morrow said Patrick always talked about "living the American dream."
?Today when I woke up, I realized how much I missed him," Rajan said. "There were no more 'good morning' texts."
A wake has been set for Friday, June 7.
