TUF 1 alums Quarry and Florian looking for smooth transition to broadcasting

Once the crowds and competition are gone for athletes there's only a few ways to stay in the game. If you're not coaching then the other option is broadcasting. As organized MMA reaches its 20-year mark, more and more fighters are beginning the transition into the media.

Guys like Frank Trigg and Bas Rutten began the process a while back and now we're seeing some of the more recent UFC veterans working towards the next phase of their lives. Kenny Florian and Nate Quarry have a bonds of sorts. They'll always be part of the special crew that made up Season one of "The Ultimate Fighter" back in 2005. Now they've got something else in common. They're fighters turned broadcasters.

Quarry? debuts tonight on Spike TV as one of the hosts of "MMA Uncensored Live" at 11 p.m. ET/PT. He says his show with radio host Craig Carton and MMA video interviewer Mike Straka will break the mold.

"It seems on the radio you get a lot more guys who give their opinion and talk about who they want to win. but as soon as they transfer from radio to TV it's like watching paint dry. Everyone's afraid to get excited about the fight and talk about who they think is going to win," said Quarry.

Quarry, 39, brought it pretty strong on several topics during a discussion on ESPN1100/98.9 FM. He spoke candidly about his former division and its champ.

"I'm sure he's been making so much money over the past few years and then you convertt that to Brazilian dollars, he's probably set for two or three lifetimes," Quarry said. "[...] Why would he necessarily want to go back into a three or fourth month fight camp, always in pain, always have to wake up and train when you've done so much already? There comes a point where he's saying "you know what? I've got enough money. I've got enough fame. My country loves me. I've set plenty of records.'"

Quarry thinks a victory over Chael Sonnen this summer could be the end of the road for Silva.

Meanwhile, Florian is under the UFC banner working for Fuel TV. His initial foray into broadcasting came with ESPN as part of its "MMA Live" show. Now his role's a bit different as the live fight analyst on Fuel TV. Florian, 35, knows the sport, can articulate the complicated aspects of it and will be critical when necessary. But he's not going to shred fighters, because he's been there.

"I hated it when I got critiqued as a fighter. So much goes into a fight that people never see, the countless hours of training, the diet, dealing with injuries. The worst feeling in the world, for me anyway, is to lose. Knowing how I felt, it's been hard for me to rip apart a guy after his fight," Florian told SI.com.

MMA is going to be well represented by a slew of former fighters who'll probably enter the media side of things over the next few years. Brian Stann made his TV debut at the Fuel TV 1 card and in just one showing exhibited the potential to be a top of the heap media personality.

Patent Law Practice Center - PLI ? Best of the 6th Annual Patent ...

We here at the Practising Law Institute are pretty excited at how this past week?s 6th Annual Patent Law Institute exceeded expectations in the caliber and frankness of the featured panelists. The panels ranged from patent prosecution and litigation, to strategic and transactional discussions, to the ultimate in panels: the judges? panel where federal & district court judges discussed the most relevant issues facing their courts along with some of the top patent attorneys in the country. If you missed this amazing institute, you?re not out of luck! The Patent Law Institute will have a second run in San?Francisco, California from March 19-20, 2012, and registration is still open. Until then,?here is a list of highlights, a best of the best if you will, from select panels throughout the Patent Law Institute.

PTO Keynote Address:?Bob?L. Stoll?gave the keynote address on the first day of the Institute. He?has had a long career with the USPTO, serving as Commissioner for Patents,?Dean of Training and Education, and?director of the Office of Enforcement for the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Although Bob is currently at Drinker, Biddle, & Reath LLP, he was able to provide in-depth knowledge of how the?PTO?s goals are to reduce pendency and how there has been a focus on clearing the oldest patent application for the sake of efficiency. Bob also shared that the extremely critical provisions of the AIA that will change the way patent prosecution will occur are the following: supplemental examination,?inter partes?review, and post grant review.

Dialogue Between the Bench and Bar: This panel?had a truly great lineup including Hon. Randall R. Rader, the Chief Judge of the Federal Circuit and Hon. William G. Young,??United States District Judge for the District of Massachusetts and a former Justice of the Massachusetts Superior Court. The judges discusses and debated the role of the United States Supreme Court and concluded the Supreme Court sees itself as a court of harmonization, taking cases not to correct a past judicial error but rather they take cases to unify the law across the land.?The panel also featured?leading members of the patent appellate bar such as?Donald R. Dunner,??Seth P. Waxman,?Dean John M. Whealan.

Litigating Against NPEs: This panel?featured?P. Anthony Sammi, Partner at Skadden,?Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP discussing his personal experience with litigating against non-practicing entities within the?Eastern?District of Texas and with federal litigation in general. Tony placed major emphasis on not?underestimating?the strength or litigation savvy of an NPE. They are very skilled federal litigators. Patent litigation is simply a subset of litigation. At the end of the day, you?re in a federal litigation in front of a jury. Therefore, the message was to choose your battles wisely: be prepared to go to litigation when dealing with an NPE.

Patent Quality and Cost-Effectiveness ? Views from In-House:?This panel?s featured panelists were?Valerie Calloway,?Serena Farquharson-Torres, and?David M. Shofi. Together they shared the in-house perspective on the strategies for enhancing the quality of a portfolio, and the strategic use of a portfolio to deter patent threats. An important tip the panelists all agreed on was to ?make yourself available to the inventors that work for your client. Some of them may never have had experience with patents. Make the invention submission as easy as possible for your client?s team of inventors. It?s essential to have an IP liaison to go back and forth between the R&D and the inventors and the legal team. ?Another great tip was for the outside counsel in the room:??in-house strategies can still assist outside counsel in being better attorneys for their own clients.

Judges? Panel: This panel?presented judiciary perspectives on effective trial presentation and in particular the patent pilot program. The panel featured?Douglas R. Nemec?as moderator, with?Hon. Tonianne J. Bongiovanni,?Magistrate Judge, United States District Court, District of New Jersey,?Hon. Denise Cote, District Judge, United States District Court, Southern District of New York, and?Hon. Mitchell S. Goldberg, District Judge, United States District Court, Eastern District of Pennsylvania. The panel revolved around the mutual agreement that patent attorneys present some of the most intellectually challenging cases before the court, and although there is a lack of patent training behind the bench, judges more often than not relish the opportunity to hear a patent case.

You?ll be doing yourself a huge favor, and others too, if you have a good and solid product or service to promote. If your sales copy is good, then you definitely can market and sell bad products, but it?s not worth it because people will talk about you and you will receive refund requests. Whether you?re promoting your own product or an affiliate product, the rules are the same.

In simple words, if your product doesn?t stand out from the crowd, then you won?t be able to convince your prospects to buy it. The use of unique selling point or proposition can be powerful if you know how to discover it and use it effectively in your marketing. Businesses use a USP to position their products and help distinguish them from others.

If you want to have the best chances for success, only shoot for high quality targeted traffic. There are legions of marketers who swear by PPC traffic being the most targeted traffic money can buy. You can get instant results with PPC if you target the right keywords. Of course it?s possible to have very high conversion rates with PPC. Certainly, that approach is valid and doable, but you need to know what you?re doing plus have the funds to do it. Control and fast results are part of PPC, so you can do a lot with it ? but obey the terms of service.

There?s nothing wrong with keeping tabs on the competition, so periodically go and see what?s up at other sites. It?s easy to find them, just enter your keywords into Google and see what?s returned. Once done, all you have to do is click on them and you?ll be good to go. You can also visit places like forums to see what is being said in your market. When you do this you?ll find that you?re also learning new and possibly profitable information. Online marketing is a fascinating and unique method of doing business. Sometimes marketing techniques and methods stop producing, so that?s why you want to use as many ways as possible. Also, you?ll find that your reach will be greater which is obviously a good thing.

Rick Santorum and more: How social issues intruded on 2012 campaign

In an election year that was supposed to be all about economic recovery, social values having to do with sex ? birth control, abortion, and gay marriage???are playing prominent roles.

In an election year that was supposed to be all about getting the country out of its economic doldrums, social values ? mainly having to do with sex ? have intruded big time. Largely, but not exclusively, it?s the realm of Rick Santorum.

In some cases (birth control vs. religious beliefs), they?ve taken firm root in the presidential election. In others (abortion and same-sex marriage), they lurk about the periphery ? likely to inject themselves more deeply as the nominating process sorts itself out.

President Obama?s policy move requiring schools, hospitals, and other religious institutions to provide birth control to employees ? even though it was adjusted to make insurance companies and not the institutions themselves responsible ? continues to gain political traction left and right.

To conservatives, it?s all about government intrusion into religious beliefs and practices. To liberals, it?s about personal choice and women?s rights in the most private of issues.

Rick Santorum: Top 7 culture war moments

A congressional hearing this past week illustrated the heated divide. On an issue of particular importance to women, the hearing on Obama?s birth control policy, led by Rep. Darrell?Issa (R) of California, began with a panel of religious leaders ? all of them men.

"I look at this panel, and I don't see one single individual representing the tens of millions of women across the country who want and need insurance coverage for basic preventative health care services, including family planning,? complained Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D)?of New York, one of several women lawmakers who walked out in protest.

?Where are the women?? she asked.

Meanwhile, same sex marriage was making news in three states. With a vote in the state legislature, Washington State was on track to become the seventh state where couples of the same gender could legally marry. New Jersey lawmakers approved gay marriage as well, although Gov. Chris Christie ? frequently mentioned as a Republican vice presidential candidate ? quickly vetoed it in favor of a voter referendum on the issue.

State legislators in Maryland Friday afternoon approved a new law allowing gay marriage, which Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley supports. Like New Jersey, opponents of same-sex marriage in Maryland vow to take it to a referendum, where ? if the voting history in many other states is a guide ? chances are it?ll be defeated
