Visualized A look inside Moog's analog synthesizer factory

While we're waiting for Moogfest to officially kick off this weekend, we stopped by the headquarters of Moog Music in Asheville, North Carolina to catch a glimpse of the analog action. The entire company is housed in one building that includes design, assembly, testing, engineering, service and a warehouse for all of the handmade electronics. Despite having all of its departmental bases covered, the outfit is still only comprised of about 50 folks total. However, the workshop-esque facility is poised to crank out 10,000 instruments over the course of the year that cover synths, stomp boxes, guitars and more. We took a stroll around the factory floor (and we were lucky enough to spot the screen-printed, Moogfest-exclusive Theremins), so dive in to the gallery below for a behind-the-scenes look at the construction process.

Millions of Muslims begin Haj pilgrimage in Mecca

MECCA (Reuters) - Nearly 3 million Muslim pilgrims started the first phase of the annual haj on Wednesday, travelling through packed streets from Mecca's Grand Mosque to the enormous camp at Mina just outside the Saudi Arabian city.

In a dense sea of humanity, all clad in the same simple white robes, the pilgrims who were unable to get onto a new rail link were packed into 18,000 buses provided by the city or perched on the roofs of trucks. Others walked the 5 km to Mina in late afternoon temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius.

"I want to ask God for paradise... I don't want anything from the world. I want to win paradise and be among good men," said Abdul Raki al-Yamani, a Yemeni who lives in Mecca, waiting to mount a bus.

Islam's pilgrimage is one of the faith's so-called five pillars and is a duty for all Muslims once in their lives if they are capable of it.

The mayor of Mecca, Osama Fadl al-Bar, said he expected the number of pilgrims this year to be close to 3 million people, including those from inside Saudi Arabia. The Interior Ministry said 1.75 million had arrived from abroad.

This year haj comes against a backdrop of division in the Middle East, a historic centre of the Islamic world, as Shi'ite Muslim Iran and Sunni countries like Saudi Arabia and Turkey back opposing sides in Syria's civil war.

Riyadh and Tehran have both played down the prospect of politically related trouble at the haj, but Saudi authorities have warned they will not allow disruptions.

In some previous years the haj has been marred by disasters, including stampedes and tent fires in which hundreds were killed. But the authorities have invested heavily in better infrastructure and there have been no such incidents since 2006.

On Thursday the pilgrims will travel a further 7 km to Mount Arafat, a rocky hill where they must stand in prayer, a moment many Muslims see as the climax of the haj.

Hussein Ali, 37, a Syrian who lives in Kuwait, decided to walk from Mecca to Arafat.

"I start marching to Arafat after midnight where it should take about three hours," he said.

They will then spend the evening on the plains of Muzdalifah where they must pick up pebbles used the following day to hurl at three large walls representing Satan in Jamarat, between Mecca and Mina.

"Arafat is the greatest pillar of the haj and I hope the Lord will accept my prayers there. I hope I have enough money so I can come here again so I can repent my sins," said Mohammed Omar Emara, 33, a fisherman from Egypt.

He travelled for three days by bus to reach Mecca after his father gave him money to make the journey.

"I am happy to be here so I can repent my sins in this old house of God and the good deeds are doubly rewarded here," Emara said, as he walked in Mecca's Aziziyah neighborhoods in search of a grocery shop to stock up on bread and water for the journey.

The Elbert C. Ray eStudio is a studio that offers free tutoring in written, oral, visual and digital communication to students in the College of Engineering.

?We can help students in the quality of the work they produce and the way they professionalize themselves. We can make them better students now and better engineers later,? said Emily Dotson, assistant director of the eStudio.

The eStudio offers free tutoring for engineers in written communication tailored specifically to the technical writing, scientific reports and lab reports these students must master.

It also helps with everything from emails to grant proposals.

Tutors at eStudio, primarily upper-level Honors students from all fields of engineering, are available to help engineering students with their presentations.

?We have rehearsal spaces with white boards, cameras to tape presentations, and well-trained tutors to offer tips and feedback to improve presentations,? said Amber Troxell, acting director of the eStudio.

The eStudio also provides a state-of-the-art digital media lab.

Its sound booth is the same one used by Lady Gaga.

Video-editing software, digital video cameras, green screens, video and audio conversion software and photography equipment are available to all engineering students.

Tutors are trained on all the equipment an expert is always there to help.

The eStudio allows engineering students to check out most of the equipment to help with their projects and presentations.

Flip cameras, professional photography equipment and audio-recording equipment are all available for checkout.

Macs and personal computers are available for checkout for use in the studio only.

Whether used for drop-in tutoring or as part of EGR199, a class which provides a one-on-one, scheduled meeting time between a tutor and a student, eStudio provides an informal, friendly place for ESL students to get assistance with written and oral communication skills.

?This is a great tool for us to improve writing and speaking skills,? said Cedric Lukonga, an ESL senior in mining engineering.

While 80 percent of the services offered at eStudio are for engineering students, 20 percent are for faculty.

?We do workshops on any type of communication issue for engineering faculty and can customize them for the specific needs of the class,? Dotson said.

The eStudio is at Room 108A of the Ralph G. Anderson Building and is open Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon.

Engineering students can drop in for tutoring or make an appointment through eStudio?s online scheduling program, available on its website: www.engr.uky.edu/estudio.

Although the eStudio has been open to engineering students since September, it will host a grand opening at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 28 to promote it for engineering students and to honor Elbert C. Ray and Charles Scroggins, whose funding helped its creation.

Students, faculty and staff in the College of Engineering are invited to attend.

The One Thing that Kills Most Lifestyle Entrepreneurs Within Six ...

The internet is a great thing.

It?s made it possible for myself and millions of others to create businesses that can be run from pretty much anywhere.

However, that?s also part of the problem.

It?s gotten too easy.

In less than an hour you can have a new domain, WordPress installed, and be ready to rock.

Why is this a problem? Because for a business to be successful usually there needs to be a modicum of planning that goes into it. ?When you can start half a dozen new businesses in a weekend, you?re simply setting yourself up for failure.

There will never be a shortage of great ideas, however we all have a shortage of time. ?If you?re going to be successful working for yourself, being selective about what projects you take on and when, is going to be absolutely key.

The Biggest Road Block to Success

Over the last year I?ve talked to and worked with hundreds of people who are getting started with their own businesses online, and more often than not, their plan is flawed.

?I want to open an e-commerce store for designer shoes, do freelance graphic design, build people WordPress websites, and start a massively successful blog.?

I hear stuff like this all the time.

What happens when you decide to do all of those things at once?

Absolutely nothing ? and there in lies the problem.

Despite all of your good intentions, you?re never able to gain enough traction on any one project to replace your income. ?So you never end up leaving your job, and are even more unhappy than when you began because you feel like you?ve let yourself down.

Times Are a Changin?

There was a time 5-10 years ago where you could start up 10, 50 or even 100 affiliate sites at once and see success. ?Throw a bunch of spam links at your new domains that have nothing but spam copy, put up some adsense, and voila, instant millionaire!

These days, I can?t think of a worse idea.

SEO is getting much harder.

Whereas you used to be able to link build very effectively for very cheap with spun content and link wheels, that?s becoming a less viable option. Last week SEO may have been dealt it?s biggest blow yet with it?s new ?Disavow Links? tool. ?For people who have been hit with a Google penalty, this could potentially be a great thing, ?but for SEO professionals it means a complete re-think in your strategy.

Simply put, it?s next to impossible to do a good job with SEO on that many sites ? especially if they don?t have rock solid content.

Good Content Will Win in the End

Most of the time when people start a barrage of projects all at once, one of two things happen:

  • Each site never gets updated, dies a quick death, and is relegated to some dark corner of the internet never to be seen again
  • They?re updated with really crappy spam content, and eventually die and are relegated to the same dark corner of the internet

Yes there have been people who have made a bunch of money with adsense sites and other low quality niche sites. ?However in the end, it?s the sites that provide excellent, high quality information on the selected niche that will win.

If you?re considering starting a new project and don?t have every intention of investing the time and/or money to load it up with solid content, you might want to rethink your business strategy.

Over the coming months and years, that?s what will win.

Over a year ago I discussed the importance social influence will have on the search engine results. ?This is proving more true than ever as Facebook, G+, Twitter, Klout etc. all start to have more relevance in search rankings.

The Economics of Too Many Projects

It?s easy to get caught up in a good idea. ?You buy the domain immediately, and get to work.

Wait 48 hours.

I learned about the 48 hour rule from Dan and Ian, and it?s so money.

If in 48 hours you still think you have an excellent idea, then start planning and see where it goes.

Think about it, if you?re going to create 100 niche sites that?s over $1k/annually in domain registration alone. ?Not to mention creating content, hosting the sites, keeping everything up to date and fresh ? that get?s really expensive, really quickly.

Especially when the majority of your sites are probably never going to be profitable.

Now imagine if you had one site that you put the same amount of time and money into. ?In my experience, most people are better off creating one site than dozens. ?It?s easier to provide value and in turn become profitable than it is with tons of small sites or projects that die before even getting off the ground.

So, How Do You Decide What Project to Take On?

I went off a little bit on affiliate sites, but this applies on a much more fundamental level as well.

When you?re first getting your start online, I?m a firm believer that you should pick one project or business model and ride that out until you?re absolutely confident in your ability to take on something new.

I started out building my skills and writing this blog. ?It was over a year before I started my next (personal) site, Daily HDR. ?It was a great idea in theory, but now it hasn?t been updated in months.

Realistically I didn?t take on a personal project that was successful until almost 18 months after beginning the first one.

Why?

Because everything I did on the first business (the blog), was laying the foundation for the next one, Overcoming the Fear of Uncertainty.

I was building skills, establishing expertise, and garnering a small following to put myself in a good spot to be successful.

Then slowly but surely, I began adding other projects to my core business.

Everyday I have a new idea for a fun project, and sometimes I?ll even buy a domain. ?However, I don?t go full speed ahead until I know the following:

  • That there?s a need for what I?m providing
  • That there?s the potential to profit
  • That I have both the interest and the time to invest in the new project

So, how should you go about finding new projects? ?Here?s what I do:

Step #1: Assess Your Current Situation

What?s your current goal? ?Do you just want a little side business built around a hobby? Do you want something that will allow you to travel the world? ?Do you want to become the next millionaire entrepreneur?

Each of these goals has a different startup path.

Assess where you are, and then make sure you have the skills necessary to get started.

Step #2: Pick the ONE Project that Will Get You Closest to Your Goal Fastest

Are you trying to build a business as quickly as possible so you can quit your job and travel? ?Then stop trying to create a bunch of bullshit affiliate sites and start freelancing.

Pick one specialty, become a relative expert, and then get clients.

I?ve said it before, and I?ll say it again: Freelancing is the best way to build your first business online.

Step #3: Stabilize the Business

Do you know how much money you?re going to bring in every month? ?Do you have clearly defined processes for managing clients and finding new ones? ?Is work coming to by word of mouth? Are you beginning to become well known in your niche?

Great, keep that going.

Before taking on any new,?significant?projects you want to make sure you have a solid base and are able to manage your current situation.

Step #4: Reassess Your Priorities and Select the Next Project

The chances are, whatever you choose to freelance in isn?t going to be something your totally passionate about. ?It?s going to be a means to being able to live out the things you are passionate about.

Once you?re freelance business is stable, then you can start thinking about other projects you want to take on that are more directly in line with what you like to do.

Two years after I began Location 180, we started up HDR Software. ?Once that was stable, Location Rebel was born. ?Then it wasn?t until a year later that Hacking the High Life was released.

Each of those are businesses built around fundamental interests of mine, but none of them started until the previous one was completely stable.

Step #5: Repeat

This is the thought process I go through everytime I?m going to begin something that I know will be a significant investment of my time and money:

  • Assess where I?m at
  • Decide which project will get me to my desired goal the fastest
  • Begin and stabilize the business
  • Reassess priorities, and find the next opportunity.

Am I saying that you should absolutely, no matter what just take on one project or business? No, I?d be a complete hypocrite if that?s what I was suggesting. ?I love having multiple projects; it?s what keeps everything fresh and interesting for me.

However I am saying you should do your best not to overextend yourself. ?Once you have a base, each future project gets easier and easier to take on, because of the work you?ve put in previously.

Put in the work up front to build your core, and then expand into the fun stuff down the road.

Suspected gunman in Wis. shooting found dead

A man who burst into a Wisconsin nail salon and opened fire was found dead on the premises. Three other people were confirmed dead and four more injured. NBC's Kevin Tibbles reports.

By M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

Updated at 8:23 a.m. ET: A man who was ordered last week to turn over all his weapons in a domestic dispute opened fire Sunday at his estranged wife's workplace near Milwaukee, killing three women and injuring four others, authorities said. He then apparently shot himself to death, police said.

Bill Dedman and Tricia Culligan of NBC News and Charles Benson, Todd Hicks, Susan Kim and Jermont Terry of WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee contributed to this report. Follow M. Alex Johnson on Twitter and Facebook.

The suspect was identified as Radcliffe Franklin Haughton, 45, of Brown Deer, Wis., said Brookfield Police Chief Daniel Tushaus, who said Haughton was found dead in the building, a 9,000-square-foot, two-story salon and day spa across the street from a busy mall. ?Police had not identified the dead on Sunday evening.

Police told reporters they were expecting an armed encounter with Haughton, who was ultimately found in a locked area in the salon. It took several hours to find him because their search was slowed by concern there may have been an explosive device.?Police said it turned out to be a propane tank and they didn't know who brought it into the building.

Milwaukee County court records show that Haughton's wife, Zina Daniel Haughton, filed for a restraining order on Oct. 8.

Police said there had been a previous incident at the nail salon, and that Haughton had slashed his wife's tires.

A hearing was held on Thursday and Haughton was ordered to deliver his firearms to the sheriff and to have no contact for four years with the complainant or the residence. The complainant isn't identified in the court record, and the court records don't indicate whether he surrendered any firearms.?

Wisconsin court records

Court record online showing the restraining order against the suspect in the shooting.

Other records indicate that Haughton was also charged with disorderly conduct in January 2011, a charge that was dismissed in June 2011 when a witness failed to appear in court.

Police said the shootings began at 11:09 a.m. (12:09 p.m. ET) at the Azana Day Spa, across Moorland Road from Brookfield Square mall in Brookfield, about 10 miles west of Milwaukee. The mall was closed as SWAT team members scoured the area for Haughton.

Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital in Milwaukee, where the victims, aged 22, 30, 32 and 40, were taken for treatment, said the survivors were women who had been shot. Two were undergoing treatment in the emergency room for non-life-threatening conditions, and the two others underwent surgery. Their conditions weren't reported.

The hospital said it?had resumed normal operations after having been locked down while Haughton was still believed to be at large.

Zina Haughton has a state license as a cosmetology manager. Two workers at the salon said Zina Haughton was estranged from her husband.

Brookfield, Wis., Police Chief Daniel Tushaus says Radcliffe Haughton was found dead after shooting at least seven people at a day spa.

Records suggest that Haughton had endured several years of financial problems, with a civil judgment for $19,000 in 2006 and a state tax lien for $5,000 in 2009. His home has been listed as for sale by owner. His former job, from 2003 to 2007, is listed in public records as general manager of a former Land Rover dealership in the Glendale area of Milwaukee County.

Auto advertisements and business records list a man named Radcliffe Haughton as sales manager at an auto dealership in Milwaukee. Calls to the dealership weren't returned.

Suspect's father aghast
Haughton's father, also named Radcliffe, was shocked and dismayed upon learning that his son was the suspect.

"Oh, my God," the elder Haughton told WTMJ in a telephone interview from his home in Florida. "The Haughton family apologizes, and we are sorry."

"This is not a reflection of the Haughton family," he said, adding: "One member of the Haughton family has done something terrible. This is not the Haughtons' way. This is not the way we live. This is not how I raised my son up."

Haughton told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel that he spoke to his son just last week, telling him he could stay with him in Florida if he needed to.

"I told him, 'Whatever you do, don't do anything stupid,'" the elder Haughton said.

People run screaming from spa
At the scene of the shootings, an eyewitness, Jenny Remshak, told WTMJ that she was parked nearby when she saw a woman "crawling out of the building, and she rolled over to the cops, and they picked her up and took her right away in the ambulance."

A few minutes later, "about 10 people come running out of the building, screaming," Remshak said.

"Everybody was just grabbing their hearts and covering their mouths and watching in fear," she said.

It was the second mass shooting in the Milwaukee area in just 2? months. A gunman opened fire at a Sikh temple near Milwaukee on Aug. 5, killing six people and wounding at least three others, before being shot to death.

Three people were killed and a fourth was injured last week when a gunman stormed a hair salon in Casselberry, Fla. The gunman then killed himself.

NBC's Isolde Raftery contributed to this report.

Radcliffe Haughton, 45, is suspected of targeting a Milwaukee-area mall on Sunday morning where his estranged wife is believed to have worked as a hair stylist. He was found dead hours later. NBC's Kevin Tibbles reports.

Calling an ambulance improves heart attack survival

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2012) ? Patients with chest pain symptoms who call an ambulance have quicker, more appropriate treatment and better survival according to research presented at the Acute Cardiac Care Congress 2012. A study from Denmark shows that calling emergency services allows pre-hospital triage and transport to the most appropriate hospital, while a Turkish study reveals that only 29% of patients with chest pain went to hospital by ambulance.

The Acute Cardiac Care Congress 2012 is the first annual meeting of the newly launched Acute Cardiovascular Care Association (ACCA) of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). It takes place from 20 to 22 October in Istanbul, Turkey, at the Istanbul Lufti Kirdar Convention and Exhibition Centre (ICEC).

Primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI), also called balloon treatment, opens the coronary vessel and is preferred over intravenous (IV) medicine (called thrombolysis) to dissolve blood clots in patients with heart attacks. To deliver this care, patients must be transported to a hospital that can provide balloon treatment. This requires well functioning treatment networks which integrate the pre-hospital and in-hospital phases of patient management so that even patients in remote areas receive high quality treatment that adheres to ESC Clinical Practice Guidelines.

"Transporting patients to hospitals with balloon treatment capacity often involves bypassing local hospitals in the vicinity of the patient," said Dr Mikkel M. Schoos from the University Hospital of Copenhagen, Denmark. "Pre-hospital triage involves digital transmission of the ambulance electrocardiogram (ECG) using telemedicine to the attending cardiologist at the hospital with the balloon capacity who can decide if the patient needs balloon treatment."

He added: "In this way, patients can be referred directly to the hospital that can perform balloon treatment, without first being seen in a local emergency room. This saves important time. We know from previous studies that reduced time to treatment equals greater salvage of the heart tissue near the blood clot after a heart attack."

Dr Schoos' study investigated the quality of these treatment networks in Denmark. The researchers found that 75% of all patients can be transferred directly to hospitals with balloon treatment capacity using pre-hospital triage.

But even when well functioning pre-hospital triage with telemedicine is in place, for 25% of patients it is not possible to deliver treatment within the time targets recommended by ESC Clinical Practice Guidelines if only ground ambulance is used. These are patients who live more than 100km (60 miles) away from the hospital with balloon treatment facilities and patients who go to a local hospital first.

The study showed that patients who are first brought to a local hospital lose important time and this increases their risk of death. "The time delay caused by first being taken to a local hospital that does not have the treatment facilities the patient needs is bad for the patient," said Dr Schoos. "Our study also shows that this system delay predicts all cause mortality in these patients who have big heart attacks. That means that a pit stop at a local hospital increases the risk of death."

There are several reasons why patients might go to the local hospital first. One is that the heart attack is not developed enough to be detected and diagnosed by the ambulance ECG. Dr Schoos is currently investigating ways to improve early diagnosis with ECG or biomarkers in the blood. A second reason could be a failure to transmit the ambulance ECG to the hospital. A third reason is that emergency medical personnel are not confident that the patient is stable enough for further transport and decide to do a pit stop at a local hospital.

Dr Schoos said: "By doing that they postpone the only right treatment. The majority of patients with acute heart attacks can be safely transported to a hospital with the needed treatment capacity, even if these hospitals are further away than smaller local hospitals."

He added: "Even though patients might get arrhythmias, which are bad heart rhythms, as a consequence of their blood clot, these can easily be treated in the ambulance by well educated emergency medical staff."

Ambulance staff must also be educated to perform and transmit the ECGs. "We need people with the right education in the ambulance for these treatment networks to function properly," said Dr Schoos.

Dr Schoos continued: "Patients and their relatives should call the emergency telephone number (112 in Denmark and Turkey) at the first symptoms of a heart attack. Valuable time is lost when patients drive themselves to emergency rooms or are driven there by relatives and they could develop a bad heart rhythm on the way. Ambulance staff can do an ECG straightaway, even in the patient's home, and ensure that patients are taken to the right hospital immediately."

He added: "Calling emergency is also important in countries that don't use pre-hospital triage with telemedicine because ambulance staff can give anti-thrombotic medicine to dissolve or stop the development of a blood clot."

To improve treatment for patients who live more than 100km away from a hospital with balloon treatment, Dr Schoos recommended arranging the catchment area of a hospital into geographical zones. This would make it possible to identify patients who might have long treatment delays because they live further away.

Geographical zone 1 could be for patients who live within 100km of the balloon treatment centre. These patients can receive pre-hospital triage with telemedicine. Geographical zone 2 is for patients more than 100km away. These patients could be transferred by helicopter, or be treated first with clot dissolving drugs (thrombolysis) followed by balloon treatment when they arrive at the centre.

In the second study, Dr Burcu Demirkan from the Turkiye Yuksek Ihtisas Hospital in Ankara, Turkey, investigated the factors influencing the use of an ambulance among Turkish patients with an acute coronary syndrome (ACS).

"Until recently there was a limited ambulance service in Turkey but the Ministry of Health has now made it available for the whole country," said Dr Demirkan. "The service is free of charge and quicker than in the past. Despite these improvements most patients still prefer self transport instead of using an ambulance when they have acute chest pain."

For the study the researchers collected data from 330 patients with ACS from 2 hospitals (a state hospital without pPCI capability and an education and research hospital that could perform pPCI).

The study found that just 29% of patients went to hospital by ambulance. This was despite the fact that 68% of patients knew the emergency telephone number (112). There were no differences in age, gender and marital status between patients who called an ambulance and patients who did not.

Patients who called an ambulance had a higher level of education, greater knowledge of the risk factors for coronary artery disease, and greater awareness of the fact that chest pain is related to heart attack and patients should quickly seek medical care. These patients were also more likely to have ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) (as opposed to non-STEMI), vertigo, syncope/near syncope, nausea, vomiting and more severe chest pain.

Among patients who did not use an ambulance, 37% were given a lift, 14% drove their own car, 26% took a taxi, 12% used public transport and 11% walked to the hospital.

Most patients (whether they used an ambulance or did not) were accompanied by family members or friends during transportation to the hospital.

Dr Demirkan said: "Less than one third of Turkish ACS patients used an ambulance for transportation to the hospital even though this service is free. This rate was lower than rates from previous studies in European countries and Australia but similar to rates in China."

She added: "The perception of symptoms as not serious or not of cardiac origin was the most common reason for not calling an ambulance. However among the patients who considered the symptoms to be serious, most of them thought that self transport would be faster. Contrary to the assumption of these patients, we found that ambulance users arrived at the hospital more quickly."

Dr Demirkan continued: "Instead of using an ambulance most of our patients used transportation that was unsafe and inappropriate for ACS patients, who urgently need reperfusion therapy. This situation was due to patients' misperceptions about the symptoms of a heart attack or false assumptions that self transport would be quicker."

She concluded: "Our study improves understanding of the reasons why patients do not call an ambulance and will help with planning health education programmes to increase ambulance use. Such programmes should teach patients about the characteristics of chest pain related to heart attack and the importance of calling 112 when they experience these symptoms."

10 most haunted houses in the US

WinchesterMysteryHouse.com

Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, Calif., took 38 years to build and includes twisting and turning hallways, dead ends and secret panels.

By Erika Riggs, Zillow

Creaking floors, inexplicable cold drafts and eerie sounds usually don't top the list of dream house features.

Unless, of course, we're talking about dream haunted house features.

It's October, and we're forgoing the usual roundup of eye candy in favor of some cobweb-draped places most people wouldn't dare put a down payment on.

Tales of horror, glimpses of ghosts and a bevy of cobweb decor ? it's all here.

Winchester House
San Jose, Calif.
It's as if original owner Sarah Winchester wanted her home to be haunted. The eccentric widow of William Winchester, founder of Winchester rifles, held nightly seances to gain guidance from spirits and her dead husband for the home?s design. The end result? A maze-like structure that took 38 years to build and includes twisting and turning hallways, dead ends, secret panels, a window built into a floor, staircases leading to nowhere, doors that open to walls, upside-down columns and rooms built, then intentionally closed off? ? all to ward off and confuse evil spirits.

Gardette-LaPrete House
716 Dauphine St, New Orleans
This Greek revival home was the site of the one of the grisliest murders in New Orleans' history. A Turkish merchant, renting the home, was buried alive in the backyard and his harem entourage murdered. Years later, the French Quarter home is still said to be the site of the merchant's wanderings, and on certain nights, exotic music and incense from ancient parties waft from the home.

Hampton Lillibridge
507 E Saint Julian St, Savannah, Ga.
This historic home was moved to its current location in Savannah?by a local restoration expert. As work began on the house, workers reported odd noises and a male presence. Early on, they discovered a crypt on the building site half filled with water and covered it.

Despite the rumors of hauntings, the home was finished and was last on the market for $2.2 million in 2011. Although it's off the market now, there's no word of a buyer.

LaLaurie House
1140 Royal St, New Orleans
The LaLaurie House, like many haunted homes, has a pretty horrific back story. Owned by socialite Madame Delphine LaLaurie and her husband, Dr. Louis LaLaurie, the house was the reported setting for vicious cruelty against the couple's slaves. Reportedly the slaves were subjected to torturous medical experiments that went on unbeknownst to the New Orleans community until a fire broke out and? neighbors rushing to rescue discovered the gruesome scenes. The LaLauries fled the country due to the backlash, and the home passed through several owners, each who claimed to hear mysterious screams and see apparitions of the tortured slaves.

At one point actor Nicolas Cage owned the home, and while he said he never saw any ghosts, he wasn't immune to the home's sinister vibes; he lost the property to foreclosure in 2009.

Joe Mabel

Whaley House
San Diego
In 1857, an entrepreneurial Thomas Whaley took advantage of a deeply discounted property in San Diego's Old Town neighborhood that once held the area's hangings. He tore down the gallows and proceeded to build his Greek Revival brick home. However, soon after Whaley and his family moved in, they reported hearing heavy footsteps moving about the house. Even after the Whaleys moved out, various tenants reported seeing ghosts and hearing the footsteps.

Today the historic home is a museum and is open daily for tourists to see if they, too, hear and see the ghostly apparitions.

FranklinCastleClub.com

Franklin Castle
4308 Franklin Blvd, Cleveland
Franklin Castle has both a creepy history as well as a creepy exterior. Home to Hannes Tiedemann, the house was reportedly the site of many vicious murders. Built in 1864, the home has all the makings of a haunted mansion: stone tower and turrets, gargoyles and wrought-iron fencing, not to mention sounds of babies crying, doors slamming and footsteps.

According to the property history, the home was last sold for $260,000 in August 2011. No word yet, if the homeowners are having any eerie experiences.

McPike Mansion
Alton, IL
Haunted houses?? how about a whole haunted city? Alton claims to be the one of the most haunted areas in America and is home to McPike Mansion, which is host to a number of active ghosts.

There's no specific backstory to the ghostly going-ons, but visitors and residents of the brick manse have claimed to be hugged by an unseen woman, hear the laughter of children and see mysterious mists and orbs of light. As far as hauntings go, not too sinister.

Borden House
240 2nd St, Fall River, Mass.
This home was the site of one of the most infamous crimes of all time: the murders of Andrew and Abby Borden, reportedly at the hands of Andrew's daughter Lizzie. As the nursery rhyme goes, Lizzie Borden took an ax and gave both her father and step-mother whacks. However, Lizzie was acquitted and moved out of the home.

The home of the murder still stands in Fall River and operates as a bed-and-breakfast, where guests report seeing Andrew and Abby wandering about.

Myrtles Plantation
Saint Francisville, La.
An antebellum home in a voodoo-rich area of Louisiana is the likely place for a haunted home. Built in?1796, Myrtles Plantation was taken over in 1808 by Clark Woodruff, his wife, Sara, and their three children. According to legend, Woodruff had a relationship with one of his slaves, Chloe, who was jealous of Woodruff's wife. Story goes that Chloe baked a birthday cake for Sara and the kids, including poisonous oleander leaves in the treat. Sara and two of their children died. Chloe confessed, but fellow slaves retaliated, hanging Chloe and dumping her body in the Mississippi.

Chloe isn't the only ghost said to haunt Myrtles Plantation. A Civil War solider was murdered on the steps of the home, and an ancient Native American burial ground is said to beneath the house. All this adds up to a home rich in creepy incidences.

Chambers Mansion
2220 Sacramento St, San Francisco, Calif.
Like most haunted homes, there's a bit of confusion surrounding the true story behind Chambers Mansion. Built in 1887, the home was named after its first owner, silver mine tycoon Richard Chambers, who lived in the home with two nieces who reportedly hated each other.

When Chambers died in 1901, the nieces inherited the mansion. One reportedly bought the house next door and moved in while the other sister, Claudia, stayed. Claudia was discovered cut in half in the mansion one day, due to a "farm implementation" accident. However, a ghost expert has claimed that Claudia was in fact murdered, and still haunts the Pacific Heights home today.

Country Stars Mourn the Death of Cancer-Stricken Teen Lane ...

Lane Goodwin

Facebook

Country music stars and fans are mourning the death of 13-year-old Lane Goodwin, whose battle with cancer gained national attention when a Facebook campaign to show support for him went viral.

Artists like Jake Owen, Chris Young, Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Josh Turner, Lee Brice, Brantley Gilbert and many others posted photos of themselves giving the thumbs-up sign in support of Goodwin, who was first diagnosed with Stage IV Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma in 2010. The very rare and aggressive form of cancer affects only one in a million children. Goodwin underwent 41 weeks of chemotherapy after the initial diagnosis, but his disease returned in July of 2011, and again in May of 2012. He passed away Wednesday evening (Oct. 17, 2012) at his home in?Beech Grove, Ky.

?At 7:53 pm our sweet Lane gained his Angel wings,? his family posted to the Prayers for Lane Goodwin Facebook page. ?Our hearts are broken but God has performed a World Wide Miracle through Lane over the past few weeks. Please continue to pray for our family especially Lane?s little brother Landen.?

Country?s Rodney Atkins reacted to the sad news on Twitter, posting, ?Please keep @TeamLaneGoodwin?s family in your thoughts & prayers in this time of loss. Lane touched many in his short life.? David Nail also mourned the boy?s loss, posting simply, ?RIP Lane Goodwin.?

The Courier-Journal reports that funeral arrangements are pending. Goodwin?s family issued the following statement today:

We would like to thank the community for the incredible display of human kindness over the past two and a half years. Our sweet Lane had a beautiful smile. He was full of energy and loved sharks, fishing, soccer, adventure and his brother, Landen. Lane had an incredible Christian faith, and we are able to find peace in the extraordinary life he lived in his short few years. We have been amazed and touched by the worldwide thumbs up movement in honor of Lane. Lane believed that the awareness this movement brought for childhood cancers would lead to a cure. Lane?s legacy will live on as we move forward with the commitment we made to him to find a cure.

Just one soda per day can cause heart attacks in men ? Bodynomics

You have no doubt heard that sugary, high-fructose soda is a major contributing factor to the nation?s ever-growing waistline, but new research indicates that even in moderation, drinking just one soda a day is a major health risk, especially for men.

According to a new study published in the medical journal Circulation, a daily soda increases your heart risk, even if it?s not leading to much weight gain.

The ingestion of such high concentrations of sugar ?appears to be an independent risk factor for heart disease,? says the study?s lead author Frank Hu, M.D., a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH), in Boston.

?Continually subjecting our bodies to high amounts of glucose, to high blood sugar levels that trigger large secretions of insulin results in stresses that in the long run show up as high risk of heart disease and diabetes,? the study?s co-author, Dr. Walter Willett, told CBS News.

The study tracked 42,833 men over 22 years, following their diet, weight, smoking and exercise patterns. In the end, researchers discovered that men who drank a single 12-ounce soda per day increased their risk of heart attack by 20 percent.

So much sugar, so little time

The researchers said a typical 12-ounce soda contains a whopping 10 teaspoons of sugar, which is a very large amount over a relatively short period of time. But they also said the study didn?t necessarily confirm that sugar itself was to blame.

?It?s very likely people who choose to drink sugared soft drinks actually have a variety of health habits that are not heart healthy, and it may well be those health habits that are responsible for the increase in risk,? Willett said.

Still, the data was enough to confirm what scientists, dieticians, nutritionists and researchers have known for years.

?We already know that sugary beverages are associated with increased obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other metabolic issues,? Hu said. ?This adds further evidence that sugary beverages are detrimental to our health.?

Harmful effects of so much sugar

Sugar in excess is a major contributor to obesity. Researchers noticed that many people were reducing fat intake but either increased their intake of sugar or did not appreciably decrease it, leaving them scratching their heads as to why they were not dropping any weight.

But it is the primary culprit in other disease processes as well.

?Sugary beverages also are believed to promote inflammation, an immune-system response involved in both heart disease and insulin resistance, a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes,? CNN reported, citing the Hu-Willett study, adding that sugary drinks increase belly fat, which can also increase a man?s heart attack risk.

During the study, blood samples were taken from about 40 percent of men. The findings: ?Men who consumed sugary beverages at least once a day had higher triglyceride levels, lower HDL levels, and higher levels of a marker of inflammation known as C-reactive protein (CRP),? said CNN. ?They also had higher levels of leptin, a hormone that helps regulate metabolism.?

The consumption of so much sugar ? from soda and a wealth of other sources ? as well as other high-fat, high-calorie processed foods, has led to record-high obesity rates, both among adults and children. The Centers for Disease Control estimated in 2010 that 34 percent of U.S. adults were obese, more than double the percentage 30 years ago. Meanwhile, the share of children who are obese ? 17 percent ? has tripled.

Some experts have hailed the fact that, only recently, the nation?s beltline seems to have stopped growing. But others say that until it begins shrinking, we shouldn?t be patting ourselves on the back.

?Until we see rates improving, not just staying the same, we can?t have any confidence that our lifestyle has improved,? Dr. David Ludwig, director of the Optimal Weight for Life Program at Children?s Hospital Boston, told The New York Times.

New app to avoid food and drink queues at sporting events

qkrappA new mobile app has been launched so people can avoid long queues at sporting stadiums and order and pay for food and drink from their seat.

QkR is the result of a collaboration between MasterCard and Commonwealth Bank and utilises the latest digital wallet technology to make simple purchases like game-day food and beverages using their iPhone or Android smartphone.

Users will be able to test out the technology when a pilot program kicks off at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne.

Transactions are initiated when a user scans a QR code at their seat in the stadium or by entering a special QkR label.

This will launch the food and beverage menu so items can be ordered and paid for with the digital wallet the user pre-registers with their debit or credit card details.

The order and payment is then sent to Etihad Stadium?s catering staff and then delivered to the user?s seat without missing a minute of the action or standing in a line.

MasterCard insists the QkR mobile app offers the same security as payment by any other MasterCard purchase.

Skydiver gets set to break sound barrier

An Austrian daredevil lifted off on Sunday in an attempt to make his delayed skydive from a balloon flying 23 miles (37 km) above the planet and breaking the sound barrier.

Cheers broke out as the craft carrying Felix Baumgartner took flight at 9:30 a.m. (11:30 a.m. ET/1530 GMT). An enormous balloon rose into the air, pulling after it an 11-by-8-foot (3.3-by-2.4 metre) fiberglass and acrylic capsule.

His mother wept as she watched the launch, which had been scrapped several times during the previous week by high winds.

"We practiced a lot and now it's paying off," Baumgartner radioed from the rising capsule to his contact on the ground, project adviser Joe Kittinger, holder of a 19-mile high altitude parachute jump record that Baumgartner hopes to smash.

Watch live: Red Bull is broadcasting the jump live, with built in a 20-second delay in case there is an accident. (See live video, left.)

Checking through an equipment list from his seat in the pressurized capsule, Baumgartner, 43, expressed concern that his astronaut-like helmet was not heating properly.

"This is very serious, Joe," said Baumgartner as the capsule, designed to remain at 55 degrees Fahrenheit ascended in skies where temperatures were expected to plunge below -91.8 F (-67.8 C), according to the project's website. "Sometimes it's getting foggy when I exhale. ... I do not feel heat."

Baumgartner's ascent into the stratosphere should take 2 1/2 to three hours. The descent should last just 15 to 20 minutes, more than half of it beneath the relative safety of his parachute's canopy.

The 30 million-cubic-foot (850,000-cubic-metre) plastic balloon, is about one-tenth the thickness of a Ziploc bag, or roughly as thin as a dry cleaner bag.

Video: Skydiver gears up to break parachute jump record (on this page)

Baumgartner aims to break a high altitude parachute jump record set in 1960 when Kittinger, 84, now a retired U.S. Air Force colonel, jumped from a balloon flying 102,800 feet (31,333 metres) and fell for 4 minutes and 36 seconds before opening his parachute. Baumgartner hopes to top that with a jump from 120,000 feet and freefall for 5 minutes and 35 seconds.

There is so little air in the upper reaches of the atmosphere that after about 30 seconds of freefall, Baumgartner should be moving faster than the speed of sound, which is roughly 690 mph (1,110 kph) at that altitude.

Among the risks Baumgartner faces is the chance that his supersonic body will trigger shock waves that could collide with the force of an explosion. But Baumgartner's medical team doesn't believe this situation is very likely because the air in the stratosphere would be too thin to carry the waves.

Baumgartner would stay supersonic for about a minute before hitting a thicker part of the atmosphere, slowing his fall.

No human has broken the sound barrier during freefall, at least not intentionally. On Jan. 25, 1966, Bill Weaver, a U.S. test pilot aboard an SR-71 Blackbird aircraft, was ejected from his damaged plane at Mach 3.18 ? more than three times faster than the speed of sound ? and survived.

"It goes to show there are still challenges to overcome and you should never lose sight of trying to achieve them," Baumgartner said in an interview posted on the project's website .

Energy drink manufacturer Red Bull is sponsoring the skydive. The firm declined to disclose how much the project or its advertising campaign would cost.

Risky business
Besides breaking several records, including highest-altitude freefall, longest freefall and highest manned balloon flight, Baumgartner and his team hope the jump will help engineers working on spacesuits for NASA and the budding commercial space tourism industry.

One company, Virgin Galactic, an offshoot of Richard Branson's London-based Virgin Group, expects to begin passenger suborbital spaceflights in late 2013 or 2014. SpaceShipTwo, the first of Virgin's planned fleet, is undergoing testing in Mojave, California, and is expected to make its first foray beyond the atmosphere before the end of the year.

When Baumgartner jumps from a capsule beneath the balloon, the position of his body will be crucial, since there is no air in which he can reposition himself. If he falls in a way that puts him into a rapid spin, Baumgartner could pass out and damage his eyes, brain and cardiovascular system.

Baumgartner's safety gear includes a custom spacesuit to protect him from the low pressure and the extreme cold.

Temperatures are expected to be as low as about minus-70 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 57 degrees Celsius). The near-vacuum puts him at risk of ebullism, a potentially lethal condition in which fluids in the body turn to gas - literally blood boiling. Severe lung damage could occur within minutes.

Red Bull plans to broadcast the jump live on its website, but has built in a 20-second delay in case there is an accident.

Developing a Creative Mindset | Search Influence Internet Marketing ...

Creative Mindset
We all know those folks who just seem to always have amazing ideas ? the ones that can look at a tin can and create a thousand different uses or art projects from it. These individuals seem to possess some kind of magic ability to conjure up an idea out of thin air. It seems as if everything is a canvas for them: the color of a living room, a blank wall, or even a cupcake. What these idea-Merlins process is a way of thinking that is open to connecting design and aesthetics into their every thought. What they possess is a creative mindset.

The creative mindset is a way of approaching a problem with an open mind and with the background thought of wondering how all the details will fit in together. This thought process is important because, regardless if the person is an artist or not, it can not only make the task at hand more efficient, but it keeps in mind how the task will be viewed by others. All too often, we do what works or what has been done before, but with a creative mindset, we are open to discovery on how to turn old shipping pallets into desks or figure out a more efficient way of running a business.

This mindset also opens us to developing an appreciation for art, design, and the way things interact. It doesn?t matter if you are an desk clerk or have a mundane job where you are a human robot, a creative mindset will create a new way of thinking that will make that job more fulfilling or inspire you to pursue side projects or hobbies that will liven up your life and others around you.

Keep an Open Eye

In developing a creative mindset, one must set up the basics. We must strive to always look at everything with an open perspective. This keeps the possibilities of discovering a new way of doing thing available. As we all have heard, God is in the details, the same goes for creativity and the way we view those details. Do not be afraid of getting up close to that assignment and looking at it intimately. The more we know about something, the easier it is to figure out a new way of handling it.

Surround Yourself

In addition, surrounding yourself with design of any time is an endless source of inspiration and keeps the avenue of creativity open. The beauty of inspiration is that it can come from anywhere or anything. With keeping all different sources of these aesthetic things around us, we allow our brain to want to take any task and design it in a way that breathes new life into it or releases it from the drones of mediocrity.

Additionally, surrounding yourself with peers who will give you honest feedback is also essential. With their critiques, we can get the suggestions we need to grow and push the boundaries of our abilities. Once we have this strong group of peers, we then also have a reservoir to pull people from to do collaborative works and lend our talents with someone else?s to further push our abilities

Never Stop Learning

The best way to maintain a creative mindset is to always have a passion for learning something new. This desire to learn also helps us to understand the process as a whole. The more we learn, the more we can draw connections between two fields of practice or between two seemingly unrelated things. With these connections we can also look at the problem from a new perspective and essentially flip the task over and approach it from a new direction with both facilitates new ways of tackling the issue and creative ways of doing so.

Apply Yourself

Whenever we get a new toy, our immediate reaction it to play with it. We want to see what each button does and if there is a secret compartment. This sense of exploration should apply to whatever task is at hand. And the best way to find out if something works is to try it out. This testing process is essential to the creative process because it gives us more details of our task at hand. We can gather data on if the solution is working or not.

Whenever there is play, there are also risks. However, taking a risk is not bad. In fact, in order to facilitate a creative mindset we must learn to take a risk on our ideas to see how they work. Yet, if the idea does not work, this is still a gain. We learn more from what doesn?t work and can move on to the next solution and take a risk on the next idea. But in order to properly take these risks in creativity, we must also believe in ourselves.

A Creative Mindset is a wonderful tool that you can utilize in your hobbies, profession, or life. This way of thinking will help keep you one step ahead with being the go to person when it comes to thinking of a new way of doing something.

Photo EXIF data suggests Nexus 4 name for upcoming LG E960

Nexus 4

The EXIF data of two newly posted images on Picasa suggest the LG built device that everyone assumes is coming soon will be called the Nexus 4. We've seen that name on both a Carphone Warehouse screen and from the French daily newspaper Le Figaro, However, this one carries a bit more weight as the fellow posting the pictures, Mehul Agarwal,  happens to be a software engineer for Google.

Yes, EXIF data can be faked. Yes, names can change -- especially when talking phones that haven't even been announced yet. But we have to think that if this information wasn't meant for the public it would have been removed by now, and I'm pretty confident in the Nexus 4 name after today's news.

Nobel winner Mo urges China dissident's freedom

BEIJING (AP) ? China's newly named Nobel laureate for literature expressed hope Friday that an imprisoned Chinese winner of the Nobel Peace Prize will be freed, putting a dent in the ruling Communist Party's attempts to burnish its credentials with the latest prize.

Mo Yan, the first Chinese writer to win the literature Nobel, made the comments about dissident Liu Xiaobo, who was awarded the Peace Prize while serving a prison sentence for opposing single-party rule, in response to a question at a news conference.

"I now hope that he can regain his freedom very soon," Mo Yan said. "If (Liu) can be freed in good health sooner, then he can study his politics and his social system."

He didn't elaborate, but Mo ? who is a Communist Party member ? appeared to be arguing that releasing Liu might allow the dissident to be convinced to embrace the party line.

His statement on Liu in his hometown of Gaomi in Shandong province came amid criticism by human rights activists that Mo compromises his artistic and intellectual independence by being a party member and vice president of the official writers association.

The call for Liu's release came just after the party's propaganda chief, Li Changchun, issued congratulations to Mo, saying the award "reflects the prosperity and progress of Chinese literature, as well as the increasing influence of China."

News of Mo's historic win was plastered across newspaper front pages Friday.

The nationalist tabloid Global Times praised Mo's award as a sign of Western acceptance of mainstream Chinese culture. As one of China's most popular writers, Mo represents a rising China in both the economic and cultural spheres, the paper said in an editorial.

"The Chinese mainstream cannot be refused by the West for long," it said.

The response was a stark contrast to two years ago when the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Liu, who was sentenced to 11 years in prison in 2009 for co-authoring a bold call for ending single-party rule and enacting democratic reforms titled Charter 08.

The Chinese government rejected that honor, calling it a desecration of the Nobel tradition, and chilled relations with Norway, where the prize is awarded but whose government has no say in whom it goes to. China's rulers forbid opposition parties and maintain strict control over all media.

On Friday, Paris-based advocacy group Reporters Without Borders released a video showing the silhouette of a lone woman identified as Liu's wife, Liu Xia, smoking by a window at night in the apartment where she has been under virtual house arrest since October 2010.

The group did not say how it obtained the footage but said it was difficult and indicative of Liu Xia's imposed isolation and the near impossibility of approaching her.

"Smoking a cigarette at her window is one of the few freedoms left to her," said the group, which demanded the release of both Liu Xia and her husband.

Chinese officials have refused to discuss Liu Xia's condition, despite the lack of a legal justification for her confinement.

Prior to Mo's comments, famed artist and activist Ai Weiwei told The Associated Press that Mo was cooperating with a system that was "constantly poisoning" its people.

"They mock the ones who dare to raise their voice and opinion, and ignore the sacrifice some have made to gain that right. This is shameful. It is a shame for the Swedish Nobel Prize committee," Ai said.

At his impromptu news conference, Mo said he'd known Liu, but the two hadn't been in contact for some time. Mo, 57, and Liu, 56, attended the same school, Beijing Normal University's Luxun Literature Institute, 10 years apart.

"I didn't have any more exchanges with (Liu) after he left literature and embraced politics," Mo said. "I don't know really much about many of his activities."

While Mo has frequently tackled communist failures and other sensitive topics in his works, some of which have been banned in China, he said politics rarely enters into his calculations.

"I think this is a victory for literature, not a victory for political correctness," Mo said. "I am writing in a time led by the Communist Party, but my works are not limited by partisanship. I have long transcended class and political limitation."

On Friday, searches for "Liu Xiaobo" or "Nobel Peace Prize" were being censored on Chinese search engines and social media sites, but looking up "Mo Yan" or "Nobel literature prize" was allowed.

Mo's win also won sweeping coverage in democratic Taiwan, which China claims to be part of its own territory.

The island's culture minister, Lung Ying-tai, on Friday called Mo "a man of humor" who has used that wit to avoid possible persecution.

Lung, a noted essayist, said the prize may help Chinese "open up their minds and hearts" and engage the world through literature.
