Brain tumors linked to dental X-rays ? - CNN.com Blogs

A study published this week in the journal Cancer shows that people who have had dental X-rays are more likely to develop a type of brain tumor called meningioma than those who have not. This does not prove that X-rays cause tumors, but supports previous research about the connection. Dental X-rays have also been implicated in thyroid cancer.

"It?s a cautionary tale ... we do know that radiation can cause tumors, and we have to be judicious with its use," said Dr. Donald O?Rourke, an associate professor of neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania who was not involved in the study.

Meningiomas are the most frequently occurring tumor in the head. They are located in the meninges, the tissues covering the brain. The vast majority are "benign" - or noncancerous - but, depending on their location, could cause blindness or other serious neurological damage. Those in the skull base are more difficult to remove in their entirety. Depending on the tumor, surgery may not be required.

Dr. Elizabeth Brooks Claus, director of medical research at Yale University's School of Public Health, led the Cancer study, which focused on patients whose tumors required surgery. The patients were mostly Caucasian because of the regions from which they came; Claus' group plans a follow-up looking at more African Americans, who have a statistically increased risk for meningiomas.

The average age of the 1,433 patient participants was 57, which means their exposures to dental X-rays were likely of a higher radiation doses because of older technology, Claus said. But they ranged between 20 and 79 years old, and came from select parts of the United States. Researchers also looked at data from 1,350 people with similar characteristics who had never had a meningioma.

The meningioma patients had more than a two-fold increased likelihood of having ever experienced a dental X-ray test called a bitewing exam. Depending on the age at which the exams were done, those who'd had these exams on a yearly basis, or more often, were 1.4 to 1.9 times more likely to have had a meningioma.

Four of these X-rays is about the same amount of radiation you're exposed to in a typical day: .005 .millisieverts, according to the American College of Radiology.

Panorex exams, which involve images of all of the teeth on one film, were also linked to meningioma risks. If study participants had panorex exams when they were younger than 10 years old, their risk of meningioma went up 4.9 times. One of these around-the-head X-rays carries about twice as much radiation as four bitewing X-rays.

"My impression is that people get more dental X-rays more frequently than the American Dental Association says," Claus said.

For an adult without cavities and no increased risk for cavities, who is not new to his or her dentist, x-rays are recommended every two to three years. For a child without cavities who's not at increased risk, the interval is every one to two years, according to this chart from the Food and Drug Administration.

There's currently a low threshold for dentists to order dental X-rays, says Dr. Keith Black, director of the Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, who was not involved in the study. Even if X-rays are not necessary for a procedure, dentists often request them as part an annual exam. Black hopes dentists will pay attention to this research linking the X-rays to brain tumors.

There are important uses for dental X-rays in making decisions regarding certain procedures. But if the teeth are otherwise healthy, Black recommends against the radiation.

There is a latency period - a lag time - of about 20 to 25 years with meningiomas induced by radiation, O'Rourke said. Only about 1% to 5% of meningiomas are cancerous, but in people with known increased radiation exposure, that risk can go up, he said.

But Dr. Otis Brawley, Chief Medical Officer of the American Cancer Society, which publishes the journal Cancer, points out that the study relied upon individuals' memories of how many dental X-rays they'd had, including in childhood, so there is room for error in that regard. And, again, it does not prove that X-rays directly cause tumors.

There are, however, estimates that up to 1% of all cancers in the United States are due to medical radiation, Brawley said.

In response to the study announcement, the American Dental Association also mentioned the study's reliance on individuals' memories.

"Studies have shown that the ability to recall information is often imperfect," said a written statement from the ADA. "Therefore, the results of studies that use this design can be unreliable ..."

The ADA also pointed out that the study included people who received dental x-rays decades ago from older technology that exposed them to more radiation.?"The ADA encourages further research in the interest of patient safety," said the statement.

If you've already been getting annual dental X-rays, there's nothing you can do to mitigate whatever risk you already have. But Black said this research is important to keep in mind when making decisions in the future, and for children.

%headline(School vouchers spark growing court fights in US

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Students like Delano Coffy are at the heart of brewing political fights and court battles over whether public dollars should go to school vouchers to help make private schools more affordable.

He was failing in his neighborhood public elementary school in Indianapolis until his mother enrolled him in a Roman Catholic school. Heather Coffy has scraped by for years to pay the tuition for Delano, now 16 and in a Catholic high school, and his two younger siblings, who attend the same Catholic elementary school as their brother did. She's getting help today from a voucher program, passed last year at the urging of GOP Gov. Mitch Daniels, that allows her to use state money for her children's education.

"I can't even tell you how easy I can breathe now knowing that for at least for this year my kids can stay at the school," said the single mother, who filed a petition in court in support of the law. The state Supreme Court is hearing a challenge to the law, which provides vouchers worth on average more than $4,000 a year to low- and middle-income families. A family of four making about $60,000 a year qualifies.

For all the arguments in favor of vouchers, there are opponents who say vouchers erode public schools by taking away money, violate the separation of church and state by giving public dollars to religious-based private schools, and aren't a proven way to improve test scores.

Even among supporters, there's dissension over whether vouchers should only be offered to low-income students on a limited basis or made available to anyone. There's also division among black and Hispanic leaders as to whether vouchers help or hurt kids in urban schools.

Many opponents also dislike scholarship programs that provide tax benefits to businesses or individuals for contributing to a fund to pay for private school. They say those programs undermine public schools by keeping tax revenues out of state treasuries, an important source of education dollars.

Fights about using tax dollars to help make private schools more affordable are popping up around the country.

In Louisiana, Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal won a victory Thursday with passage of legislation that expands statewide a voucher program in New Orleans as part of broad changes to the state's education system.

Virginia lawmakers recently passed a bill backed by Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell allowing a tax credit for contributions to private school scholarship programs, and Florida GOP Gov. Rick Scott signed a bill expanding a similar program. Creating or expanding voucher or certain scholarship programs has been debated in New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, South Carolina, Ohio, New Jersey and elsewhere.

But school choice supporters have faced roadblocks, too.

Recently, in Arizona, GOP Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed a bill that would have expanded a law passed last year that created education savings accounts for parents of students with disabilities; the money could cover expenses such a private schooling, virtual programs or future college costs.

The vetoed bill would have broadened eligibility to gifted students, children of military personnel or students attending poor performing schools. Brewer said it was too early to consider such proposals before a new budget is approved, and she expressed unease about changing the education system in ways that may make parts of it uncompetitive.

Democrats historically have shunned vouchers, but some are joining the push by many Tea Party-inspired Republicans. The momentum carries over from last year's congressional debate over whether to extend the District of Columbia's voucher program. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and other congressional Republicans successfully pushed for that program to be included as part of a last-minute deal to avert a federal government shutdown.

Also last year, the school district in Douglas County, an affluent Denver suburb, adopted a program, now stalled under court order, that would allow up to 500 students to receive about $4,500 each in state money to use toward private school. Legal challenges to the Colorado district's program and the Arizona one are pending at the appellate level.

The Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice, an advocacy group based in Indianapolis, estimates that about 212,000 students are using vouchers or tax scholarship programs through more than 30 such programs, 17 of which provide vouchers. The group said that total has risen from 36,000 students in 2000.

Teresa Meredith, an elementary school teacher in Shelbyville, Ind., and an officer in the Indiana State Teachers Association who is the lead plaintiff to the state suit, said she's not opposed to private schools. But when parents choose to send their kids to one, she said, they are making the choice to pay for it.

"If they're not happy with their local public school, then they need to choose to make their local public school better, not run from it," said Meredith, a mother of four.

Pedro Noguera, a sociologist at New York University who specializes in urban education policy, said even with a voucher, many students still cannot afford or get into or find transportation to more exclusive private schools.

"As a strategy for creating more integrated schools, it hasn't shown that it works at all. So we have to ask ourselves, what is really the goal here?" Noguera said. "If the goal is to increase access to high quality schools, there's no research supporting it. But, there is clear evidence that as you lose children from the public schools, you undermine the fiscal support for public education."

But Pennsylvania Sen. Anthony Williams, a Democrat, says too many low-income kids stuck in persistently failing schools in some of the neighborhoods he represents in Philadelphia go to unsafe schools and can't wait for a change. He calls the private boarding school he attended in high school on a private scholarship a "lifesaver," and he's advocating for legislation that would create a voucher program. He said even if a public voucher wouldn't cover all the tuition, private scholarships can help fill the void.

"I believe a child should not be required to go to a place like that," Williams said of low-performing schools. "They should have options just like anybody else in America does and it will serve us better in the long run as opposed to requiring them to go to a place that we know they don't get the rudimentary skills."

Whether to offer school vouchers is one of the most contentious issues in education. Some of the first programs were rolled out in the 1990s in Milwaukee and Cleveland, although the debate goes back decades and President Richard Nixon was a fan of vouchers, according to the Center on Education Policy, which advocates for more effective public schools. Those on both sides of the issue have won court victories and cite research to back up their cause.

In recent years, the message among voucher supporters has shifted to one where it's not just about helping poor students, but empowering parents with choice valued and their satisfaction emphasized, said Alexandra Usher, a senior research assistant at the center.

With state budgets facing in recent years a "fiscal buzz saw" and education frequently about half a state's budget, there's a recognition that better value is needed, said Robert Enlow, the president of the Friedman Foundation.

"People are beginning to see that allowing families the ability to choose is giving them access to quality education they would not otherwise have had," Enlow said.

Michelle Rhee, the former superintendent of schools in the District of Columbia who founded the advocacy group StudentsFirst, believes vouchers should be made available only to low-income students assigned to low performing schools, and that private schools must show they are effective. She said doesn't support the idea that "every kid just has a backpack with their money in it" to go anywhere because she has not seen an economic model where that is sustainable.

"I very much feel our time and effort and resources should be focused on, as it pertains to vouchers, on what we're going to do with low-income children who otherwise would be trapped in nonperforming schools," Rhee said.

They can start with something as simple as a critical comment, a billboard image or a magazine cover. They affect all age groups but primarily older children and teenagers. The two most common forms are polar opposites but equally detrimental.

They are eating disorders, and despite decades of study and attempts to raise awareness, anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are becoming more prevalent. In the past decade, anorexia-related hospitalizations for children 12 years old and younger have increased by as much as 199 percent, according to a brief by the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project.

Columbia student Cassandra Sheets remembers her first experiences with eating disorders as a preteen.

?Basically, I was always thinking about food,? Sheets said. ?My grades were really terrible, and I didn?t have a lot of friends. All of my time was spent thinking about what I could eat and what I wanted to eat and thinking about certain arbitrary numbers that I wanted to get to.?

Now a member of The F Word, Columbia?s feminist club, Sheets runs Body Positivity workshops so students have an opportunity to share stories. The next workshop will take place during The F Word?s April 13 conference in the Alexandroff Campus Center, 600 S. Michigan Ave.

?I wish that somebody had been willing to talk to me about it, somebody who had gone through it and was OK and has made it from hell and back,? Sheets said. ?It was hard for me to find people at first because I wouldn?t talk about it, but once you start talking about it, you realize just how many people are going through the same thing.?

She attended therapy sessions several times as a teenager, but it was not until college that her perspective changed.

?I started calling myself a feminist and discovering all of these great ways to analyze the media and analyze all of the harmful messages about how my body was wrong, and knowing now that it?s not wrong,? Sheets said. ?I have a lot of good things going for me in my life now, and I don?t want my eating disorder to mess that up. I realized it was more important to have energy for school, for friends and feminist stuff than it was for me to lose weight.?

The project defines anorexia as a psychiatric condition in which a person idealizes an unrealistically thin body image and strives to lose weight by not eating. The condition is similar to obsessive-compulsive disorder, as the individual obsesses about weight to an unhealthy degree.

According to project authors, people with anorexia tend to avoid social situations where food or drink is involved. Usually there is a significant weight loss, such that an individual is at least 15 percent underweight for his or her size. When this happens, bones become noticeable beneath the skin and there is a serious risk of weakening of the heart muscle, which can cause disturbances of the heart?s rhythm. There is also the risk of outright starvation.

Cynthia Bulik, director of the University of North Carolina?s Eating Disorders Program and author of ?The Woman in the Mirror: How to Stop Confusing What You Look Like with Who You Are,? said the increase of anorexia among children is especially dangerous.

?With children, anorexia can take hold fast,? Bulik said. ?Since they are already small, falling off the growth curve can happen very fast and their weight can [drop] like a stone, so you have to be vigilant.?

Bulimia is another psychiatric condition that causes an individual to obsess about body weight. It is marked by the use of self-induced vomiting to hold weight down. This habit often pairs with ?binge eating,? in which people eat as much as they want without worrying about caloric repercussions because they regurgitate afterward.

Signs of bulimia often go unnoticed because they are not as visible as those of anorexia. Bulik added that family members should watch for a pattern of sudden leave-taking after meals, the disappearance of large amounts of food and marks on the palms or knuckles from sticking hands in the mouth to induce vomiting if they suspect a loved one has an eating disorder.

Dr. Martha Levine, assistant professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at the Pennsylvania State University Hershey Medical Center, said she believes the media influence the frequency of these disorders among youths.

?A multitude of magazines are targeted toward making women feel that there are always problems with how they look and present themselves,? Levine said. ?Advertisers do this because by making people feel uncomfortable, they can try to convince them to buy their products.?

Eating disorders are not always a lifestyle choice. They can have a genetic component as well, said Nancy Matsumoto, co-author of ?The Parent?s Guide to Eating Disorders.?

?It is [likely] that eating disorders are a combination of genetic and environmental factors,? Matsumoto said. ?You don?t have to be genetically susceptible, but it would be far more likely that you would get an eating disorder if you had a genetic predisposition.?

With tax season being here, many of you will be receiving a substantial (hopefully) tax refund in the mail.? I was hoping I could use this article swap to urge you to not waste your tax refund!? Instead, I?m going to share with you five smart ways you can spend your tax refund wisely and still enjoy the fruits of your labor.

1. Bulk up that emergency fund!? Sexy?? Definitely not?? But hey, it?s a extremely efficient way to use that tax refund from Uncle Sam!? No longer are the days of easy credit and ample job opportunities.? It?s harder than ever to make ends meet these days, so why put you at risk by not having a large emergency fund?? Remember, the key here is to save at least 6 months? worth of expenses.? For those of you with families, this will be a significant amount.
2. Grab some continuing education classes! This is easier said than done but investing in your career is one of the best investments you?ll ever make.? You need to keep up with the constantly changing workforce and respective industries.? Do some research and see what local colleges offer continuing education classes.? You can usually find solid classes for a couple hundred bucks at local community colleges.? Get on it!
3. Get an energy audit of your home! Look, as much as you think your home is efficient, you?re probably wrong.? You?re not a contractor are you?? Yah, didn?t think so?? Don?t assume the work you did was perfect.? Have an energy efficiency audit done on your home and see where you can improve.? I guarantee that there will be something you can improve on.? If not, well I?ll owe you five bucks?
4. Boost that Roth-IRA baby! You haven?t loved that Roth-IRA enough have you?? I know I haven?t either!? Take your tax refund and place it right back into your retirement savings.? You will not regret this move as the more you put into your Roth-IRA, the sooner you can retire!? Retiring early is music to my ears, do this one simple step and you will be the master of your tax refund.
5. Save for your next vacation! Did you go into debt for your last vacation?? Those days are over my friends!? Take your tax refund and place it right back into your next vacation fund. Heck, you could even place the money in a high yield bank like Ally.? Whatever you do, just don?t spend it on a big TV, save for your next vacation instead!? C?mon, the Bahamas are calling your name.

As you can see, there are some really smart ways to use your tax refund.? Don?t follow the herd in 2012 and go blow the money on some random electronics.? In fact, stay away from the stores!? Talk it over with your family and make a decision to use the money wisely.? I better not hear of any splurging, you hear me?!

Exclusive look: 'Toddlers' star 'blows it' on stage

Isabella Barrett is no stranger to "Toddlers & Tiaras" viewers. The tyke is known for her rivalry with fellow pageant princess Paisley Dickey, her outspoken ways and her off-show performances -- including her headline-making, controversial take on LMFAO's "Sexy and I Know It." But on Wednesday night's season premiere, "Toddlers" viewers will see a new, somewhat less confident side of Isabella.

In an exclusive sneak peek, the pageant hopeful can be see hitting the stage with a glitzy entrance only to get lost in her routine moments later.

Now most people might see that momentary flub as no big deal, but most people aren't Isabella's mother.

"When she got on stage, she was lost," mom Susanna said. "I feel sad. Seeing her blow it is like blowing the World Series. It's just heartbreaking to me."

Then mom, overcome with emotion, had to step away from the camera.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The newly released 1940 U.S. census is such a digital smash that it took a day for the website hosting it to get up to speed after tens of millions of hits almost paralyzed it.

The National Archives said Tuesday that census pages are again available for viewing. The government website got 37 million hits hours after the information was first released to the public Monday morning, all but shutting out would-be researchers from the records.

"We expected a flood, and we got a tsunami," Archives.com, the private company that's hosting the website, said in a statement.

The government released the 1940 census records ? the single largest collection of digital information ever made available online by the National Archives ? for the first time after 72 years of confidentiality expired. The records allow individuals and families to learn details about their pasts.

Documents obtained by The Associated Press show the National Archives badly underestimated their popularity, saying in the no-cost contract awarded in November to the third-party Web host that the site would be able to handle up to 10 million hits per day and up to 25,000 concurrent users. The documents also said the site was expected to scale up to handle greater demand.

In another document issued in early 2011 that explained why the National Archives wanted to contract hosting of the records, the archives said its own site could handle only between 250 and 500 concurrent users.

In a tweet posted after 5 p.m. Monday on its Twitter account, the archives said the website had gotten 37 million hits since the information was released at 9 a.m. A spokesman for the company hosting the records said they were receiving even more traffic Tuesday as interest in the 1940 census continued to grow.

Joe Godfrey, the senior director of projects for Archives.com, said he didn't immediately have updated information on how many hits they had received but said it was expected to exceed Monday's.

Susan Cooper, an archives spokeswoman, said the problems began as soon as the information was released on the website. She termed the problems a "virtual traffic jam."

"The problem is, we just weren't expecting the huge volume that we got," Cooper said.

"We're adding a lot more servers, a lot more muscle to the website," she said.

Godfrey said Tuesday that the company's engineers spent the good part of Monday into the evening working to expand the company's ability to handle the unexpected crush of traffic. He said the company had tested the site based on receiving 75,000 to 100,000 concurrent users.

He said that in the hours after the records' release Monday, they were receiving more than 100,000 concurrent users, but he didn't immediately have an exact number.

"It exceeded our most optimistic estimates," he said.

Bob Timmermann, a 46-year-old librarian from Tujunga, Calif., said the lure of the 1940 census is that "you find out if what your parents told you about their lives was actually true."

He said he had tried for several hours Monday to access data but was unsuccessful.

More than 21 million people still alive in the U.S. and Puerto Rico were counted in the 1940 census. The census followed a decade in which tens of millions of people in the U.S. experienced mass unemployment and social upheaval as the nation clawed its way out of the Great Depression and rumblings of global war were heard from abroad.

Monday's release includes digitized records for details on 132 million people. Access to the records is free and open to anyone online, but they are not yet searchable by name.

For now, researchers will need an address to determine a census enumeration district ? a way to carve up the map for surveying ? to identify where someone lived and then browse the records.

Every decade since 1942, the National Archives has made available records from past censuses. The records, which include names, addresses and income and employment information, are rich with long-veiled personal details.
