A Ghost Haunting Obama Named Barofsky

Neil Barofsky is not the sort of guy you want popping up in a tight election race, not if you?re Barack Obama.

That's first because Barofsky is an all-too-credible critic of the Obama administration?s lopsided economic approach, which included throwing enormous resources into bucking up big banks and then allowing them to grow even bigger while slighting the underwater homeowners whose plight has weighed down the recovery on which the president's reelection probably depends. Second, it's because Barofsky is out there trying to sell a new book ??Bailout: An Inside Account of How Washington Abandoned Main Street While Rescuing Wall Street ??which offers a?devastating indictment of Obama?s team, especially his Treasury secretary, Tim Geithner. ?

According to Barofsky, the former inspector general in charge of overseeing the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program, the current scandal over the banks? manipulation of Libor ? the London Interbank Offered Rate, one of the most important benchmarks in the world since banks use it to set rates for lending to each other ? is just more evidence that Wall Street?s biggest banks have further captured the financial system on Obama?s watch. And no one can do anything about it, unless they are broken up.?

?This goes to the bigger problem of 'too big to fail,' ? Barofsky said in an interview. ?Because you can?t indict one of these banks. You can?t bring an indictment that would bring down our entire financial system.?

Beyond that, says Barofsky, the response of Geithner and the regulators to the Libor scandal runs an ?incredible parallel? to their feckless attitude toward the misconduct of the banks in the administration?s Home Affordable Modification Program, or HAMP.? ?Check a box, send an e-mail, but don?t do anything to address the problems,? he says. Barofsky was referring to official reports that, at the height of the financial crisis in 2008, British bank Barclays admitted to the New York Fed that it was booking artificially lower borrowing rates to help its bottom line and?that Geithner, as the head of the New York Fed, sent an e-mail to the Bank of England about the problem, but without any apparent follow-up.

In more unwelcome election-year publicity for the administration, Geithner is expected to testify before the House and Senate banking committees this week about his response to the Libor scandal. In a recent appearance at a private conference, Geithner took credit for notifying the British and regulators at ?a very early stage.?

"The United States, to its credit, set in motion at that stage a very, very powerful enforcement response, the first of which you've now seen," Geithner said last week at the CNBC Institutional Investor Delivering Alpha Conference in New York.

But Barofsky criticizes Geithner over ?the conversation that didn?t happen,? which would have been ?to call up the Department of Justice and say, ?We just had a bank [Barclay?s] confess on tape to participating in a global conspiracy to fix the interest rate.? Instead, the Department of Justice didn?t open a case until 2010.?

In the interim, Barofsky says, Geithner and other U.S. regulators conveyed to the market that the manipulation was not a serious matter to them, even basing their rescue programs and the bailout of AIG on what they had reason to suspect were artificially lowered Libor rates. This was done in an apparent effort to rescue the banks at all costs not only during the crisis, but after the worst of it had passed.

Barofsky is not alone in his criticism. Last week, Sheila Bair, the former head of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., also criticized Geithner and U.S. regulators. "Looking at those e-mails, it looks like they had pretty explicit notification of some very bad behavior, and I don't understand why they didn't investigate," she said.

It took nearly four years for penalties to be brought. Last month, Barclays agreed to pay $453 million in fines and penalties. CNBC reported on Monday that U.S. prosecutors and British investigators are also close to bringing charges against some traders who manipulated interest rates.

As with Libor, the banking industry?s abuse of the HAMP program is well documented, as is the administration?s failure to curb those abuses. For the most part, Treasury simply stood by while the banks strung along thousands of mortgage holders, promising ?modification? of their loan terms that never happened and sending them needlessly into deeper debt. The administration also fretted over the ?moral hazard? of helping reckless homeowners, though in more cases than not those homeowners had been led on by securities firms manipulating the mortgage bubble, and the administration had long since stopped worrying about the moral hazard of bailing out too-big-to-fail banks. In particular, Geithner and Obama?s chief economic adviser, Larry Summers, avoided pushing for a "cramdown," which would have allowed federal bankruptcy judges to force banks to reduce mortgage balances, cut interest rates,?and lengthen the terms of loans to help borrowers get out of trouble.?Even Obama's own housing secretary, Shaun Donovan, later told National Journal that that was a "missed opportunity."

And in the end, the administration used only a fraction of the total amount of rescue money allocated under TARP to help underwater homeowners. ?They had $250 billion, allocated, that they could use without a single vote in Congress. And they gave it back,? says Barofsky. ?People need to be held accountable.?

Asked to respond to the criticisms in Barofsky?s book, a Treasury spokesman said only, ?We haven?t seen the book, but we wish Mr. Barofsky well.?

Gold 22% Rally to Record Seen by Eric Sprott: Commodities ...

Gold will climb to a record by yearend as the global economy slows from the weight of too much debt, says Eric Sprott, the founder and chairman of Canadian fund manager Sprott Inc. (SII)

?I just can?t imagine the demand for gold is going down,? he said in a July 9 interview at Bloomberg?s Toronto office. ?I don?t personally see a solution to the problem that we?re in, the financial leveraging issue that we all have where everybody wants to shed debt and there?s no buyers.?

Sprott?s company manages funds investing mainly in gold, silver, and precious-metals equities. He expects bullion will rise as investors seek the safest assets while governments spend to stimulate their economies, increasing chances that inflation will accelerate.

Scouting Report: Impact and Union square off for first time in history

Saturday at PPL Park will mark the first time in history that the Philadelphia Union do battle with the Montreal Impact. Jesse Marsch's Eastern Conference newcomers sport a 6-11-3 record this season, with 21 total points and 4-point lead on the Union in the standings.

Philadelphia is 4-3-2 all time against Canadian opposition, with 1 win, 1 loss, and 1 draw against Toronto and Vancouver this season.

Montreal is looking to break out of a bit of a slump. The Impact ended a three game losing streak last week with a 2-1 home win against Columbus.

Impact Attack

There's been a rotating cast of characters in the Montreal attack this year, which one might expect from an expansion team. Most recently, newly signed DP Marco Di Vaio has been playing at the top of a 4-2-3-1 formation. The former Italy international is still looking for his first goal with the club.

Montreal's forward depth takes a hit from there. First round 2012 Super Draft selection Andrew Wenger is out with a hamstring strain. Sanna Nyassi is suspended due to yellow card accumulation. Justin Braun was just traded to Real Salt Lake. And the team's other Italian forward, Bernardo Corradi, is out with an ACL tear.

Marsch is likely to choose from Lamar Neagle, Justin Mapp, Davy Arnaud, and Felipe Martins, as a midfield three behind Di Vaio. Those four players have combined for 9 goals and 12 assists this season.

Mapp, formerly with the Union, has been playing well for the Impact. Normally a winger, he had a good game as an experimental central midfielder in last week's 2-1 win over Columbus.

Impact Defense

Assuming Marsch stays with the 4-2-3-1, we're likely to see Patrice Bernier and Collin Warner sit in front of the Montreal defense as a midfield pairing. Bernier actually leads the team with 5 goals and 5 assists.

With 36 goals conceded, Montreal statistically has the weakest backline in the league. That should change drastically when former AC Milan star Alessandro Nesta joins the starting lineup. The highly rated World Cup winner will continue his conditioning work this weekend and will not be making his MLS debut at PPL Park.

Marsch is also without his starting center back pairing. Matteo Ferrari is out with a quad strain and Nelson Rivas is out with an abdomen injury.

That leaves Hassoun Camara, and former Union defender Shavar Thomas as the likely pairing in central defense. Lancaster native Zarek Valentin is a shoe-in at right back, while Jeb Brovsky or Tyson Wahl would slide in at left back. The Impact also recently signed 21-year-old Swiss defender Dennis Iapichino from FC Lugano. He's waiting for an International Transfer Certificate.

Former Galaxy goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts made the move to Montreal in the off-season. The Jamaica international has not had the greatest season, but he's a capable 'keeper and brings a lot to the table when he's on his game.

Keys to the Game

Like any expansion club, there are growing pains that come with organizing a team under a new coach. Marsch has done a lot of tweaking this season, dealt with injuries and suspensions, and moved new signings in and out of the lineup. Montreal's depth is tested at this point in the season, but they do have quality players who are learning to work together.

The key is going after the Impact's weakened defense, which is missing some key parts. The Montreal defense has conceded 12 goals in the last 5 games. Philadelphia has scored 15 goals in the last 7 games. The Union will look to re-discover the scoring form that eluded them mid-week against Kansas City.

6 Types of Residential Electrical Switches | Plumbers Dallastx

Residential electrical switches are devices that control the flow of electrons in an electrical circuit. They are binary devices; they are either on (closed) or off (open). Residential switches are designed to be operated by hand and are also known as hand switches.

Single Pole Switch

It turns a light or electrical appliance on or off from a single location. This type of switch is marked with an on or off marking. To use it correctly, make sure that it is wired correctly in position so that the on and off marks appear properly. The switch has two terminals. The brass colored terminal is for the hot incoming and the other is for the outgoing hot wire to the switch.

Toggle Switches

The common light switch in the home is a good example of a toggle switch. It is operated by a lever angled in one of two or multiple positions. When pushed or pressed, they rest on their lever position. Others are designed with an internal spring mechanism that returns the lever to a normal position after being turned on or off.

Joystick Switches

The lever found in joystick switches is designed to move freely in more than one axis. More than one switch mechanisms can be actuated depending on which way the lever on the switch is pushed. The lever also turns depending on how much it is pushed too. The switch has a circle and dot notation which indicates the direction required to actuate contact. These are used to control video games and robots.

Selector Switches

For selector switches, a rotary knob or lever is used to select one of two states. They can rest on either of the two positions when actuated. They are sometimes designed with a spring return mechanism that provides momentary operation.

Push Button Switches

These are operated by press and release mechanism. They are two position devices and most of them are designed with a spring mechanism which returns the switch to an out or un-pressed position. This provides a momentary action. There are push button switches that remain in an on or off position with every push of the button.

Motion Operated Switches or Limit Switches

There are machines in the household that are designed to be controlled by motion rather than human operation. They are commonly used to limit a machine?s motion. It turns off power to equipment if it moves too far.

Other Types of Switches

There are many more different types of switches. These are commonly used in large scale operations. They are found in industries, nuclear reactors and processing plants. Some are designed to work efficiently to provide effective response in different applications. A good example is the proximity optical switch. It uses light to detect a machines position or even determine people?s position in a building.

Henry David Thoreau: 12 quotes on his birthday

Henry David Thoreau,?American poet, author, naturalist, philosopher, abolitionist, and leading Transcendentalist, was born on July 12, 1817 in Concord, Mass. While studying at Harvard, Thoreau read "Nature," a small book written by his neighbor, Ralph Waldo Emerson. Emerson took an interest in young Thoreau and introduced him into his circle of friends where Thoreau met some of the greatest thinkers of his time. In 1845, Thoreau began a two year experiment of simple living in which he built himself a hut on Emerson?s land, on the banks of Walden Pond. From this experience came Thoreau's famous book "Walden, or Life in the Woods" (1854). Thoreau also refused to pay taxes because he disagreed with both the Mexican-American War and slavery. He was imprisoned for one night and released the next day when his aunt paid his taxes for him against his will. After this experience, Thoreau wrote the essay entitled "Resistance to Civil Government," also known as "Civil Disobedience" (1849). Thoreau also wrote books about natural history and travel narratives. These works were dismissed during his lifetime, but are now recognized as a true scientific study of ecological patterns. Thoreau died in 1862 and is buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, Mass.

London Underground: NFC mobile payment technology 'too slow' for the tube

While it's tested the idea several times in the past, London's Tube system won't be getting mobile-based payment technology any time soon. Customer Experience Director Shashi Verma told GigaOM that existing NFC technology wasn't able to drop below the 500 millisecond barrier -- something which Transport for London demands from its high-churn Oyster card-based turnstiles. Verma added, "The concerns are only around NFC technology and not EMV. We are keen to see any progress the industry can make in this area." At least for the near-future, it looks like Brits will have to glue their NFC cards to their phones if they want that contactless payment look while journeying around London.

DirecTV vs. Viacom squabble could see MTV, Comedy Central and 24 others go dark at midnight

The latest participants in the carriage dispute dance are DirecTV and Viacom, with the two companies attempting to reach a new agreement before their existing one expires tonight. If they don't, the network's 26 channels (MTV, BET, VH1, Spike TV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon etc.) could be cut off at midnight. As usual, each has its own side of the argument with Viacom claiming DirecTV has been underpaying for years, while DirecTV accuses Viacom of seeking an increase that will add up to a billion dollars in a year and is responsible for pulling the channels while negotiations continue. We're not particularly sympathetic to the plight of either corporate behemoth (or optimistic that any savings will ever reach customer's pockets) but if you must support one over the other then there's plenty of propaganda to be found at the links below. This may not be as crucial as Dish Network's (potentially) Breaking Bad-interrupting tiff with AMC, but if we have to miss an episode of Workaholics or Awkward it's going to be bad for everyone.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Now that Christopher Nolan is done with his epic Batman trilogy, the filmmaker has quashed speculation that he might be involved in a "Justice League" movie featuring the Dark Knight.

Writer-director Nolan said his take on Batman wraps up with "The Dark Knight Rises," his third and final film centered on the DC Comics superhero. In an interview over the weekend to promote the finale, Nolan said he has no "Justice League" plans.

"No, none at all," Nolan said. "We're finished with all we're doing with Batman. This is the end of our take on this character."

Fans have conjectured that Nolan might return to Batman by producing a big-screen take on "Justice League," DC Comics' "Avengers"-style ensemble whose key superheroes include the Dark Knight, Superman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern.

Nolan guesses that the "Justice League" rumors started because of his involvement as a producer on next summer's Superman relaunch, "Man of Steel."

He also said he not intend to get involved with any future solo Batman films when distributor Warner Bros., which owns DC Comics, decides the time is right to launch a new take on the masked vigilante.

"Batman will outlive us all, and our interpretation was ours. Obviously, we consider it definitive and kind of finished. The great thing about Batman is he lives on for future generations to reinterpret, and obviously, Warners will have to decide in the future what they're going to do with him," Nolan said. "We've had our say on the character. ...

"I've got no plans to do anything more, and certainly, no involvement with any 'Justice League' project."

After Disney's success with "The Avengers," the big-screen round-up of Marvel Comics superheroes that has pulled in $1.45 billion worldwide, speculation has grown that Warner Bros. would get its own ensemble flick on the drawing board.

Nolan resurrected the Dark Knight with 2005's "Batman Begins" and shattered box-office records with 2008's "The Dark Knight," which won a posthumous Academy Award for Heath Ledger as the Joker.

"The Dark Knight Rises" reunites Nolan with Christian Bale as billionaire Bruce Wayne and his Batman alter-ego; Michael Caine as stalwart butler Alfred; Morgan Freeman as Wayne Enterprises mastermind Lucius Fox; and Gary Oldman as upright Police Commissioner Jim Gordon. Joining the cast are Anne Hathaway as daring thief Selina Kyle, also known as Catwoman, and three of Nolan's "Inception" co-stars: Tom Hardy as brutish villain Bane; Marion Cotillard as Wayne's new business ally, Miranda Tate; and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as gutsy cop John Blake.

The story begins eight years after the action of "The Dark Knight," with Batman vanished from the scene and vilified as an enemy of Gotham City, whose tough anti-crime laws have cleaned up the streets. A limping, emotionally shattered recluse, Bale's Wayne is forced back into action as Bane lays deadly siege to the city.
