Causes ringing in the ears and dizziness | Bodybuilding ...

If you experience dizziness and ringing in the ears, you could be suffering from a problem in your inner ear. Vestibular labyrinth, present in the inner ear, helps us maintain our balance. If there is an infection in the inner ear, this could result in dizziness.

Ringing in the ears and dizziness are often inter-related, and people who suffer from tinnitus will also experience dizziness.

?

What Causes of Ringing in the Ear and Dizziness?

?

If the ringing in the ear and dizziness is constant, you should an appointment with your ENT doctor, so that they can run necessary tests to evaluate your hearing and diagnose the reason behind your discomfort.

Some of the common reasons for experiencing dizzy spells and hearing a ringing sound in your ears are as follows:

The most common cause is an inner ear infection. Once the infection is treated with suitable medication and the ear gets better, the ringing and dizziness should slowly fade away.

Acoustic neuroma, a non-cancerous tumor, could also be the reason for dizziness and ringing in the ears. This is essentially a benign growth that is located on the acoustic nerve that connects the inner ear to the brain. Ringing in the ears and vertigo are symptoms of an acoustic neuroma. Imbalance and hearing loss are also possibilities, if you have this growth.

Meniere?s disease is another cause of dizziness and ringing in the ear. This results from a head injury or excessive build-up of fluid in the inner ear.

Vestibular migraines could also be another cause.

?

What are the Treatment Options?

?

Depending on the cause of ringing and dizziness, your doctor will prescribe a treatment plan for you. There are also many natural ringing in the ears treatment options, but make sure you consult with your physician before choosing a treatment plan.

Aromatherapy with essential oils lemon, rose, rosemary, and cypress are recommended to help with better blood circulation. Administer the oil through an aromatherapy diffuser or vaporizer. You could also get a head massage, which will make you feel better.

Alternative therapy like magnet therapy, hypnosis, acupuncture, hyperbaric oxygen, and craniosacral therapy are also being used by holistic healers to control the discomfort and pain one experiences from ringing ears.

Herbs like hawthorn, gingko biloba, melatonin and black cohosh can be used to help ease the pain.

Counseling is a good treatment option if you have been diagnosed with tinnitus, as the condition can take a lot out of you emotionally. Relaxing and going for a neck, head and chest massage, and opting for yoga, meditation or biofeedback help to reduce the pain. You could also opt for homeopathy, which has some remedies for this condition.

Sound therapy is used to distract you form hearing the ringing in the ear. Some of the sounds used are ocean waves, the wind, humming, rainfall, or chants.

If you still don?t feel relief after all this, see your doctor who will look at your condition and treat you or propose techniques that will help you cope better with dizziness and ear ringing.

Baby Boom: Did Retained Juvenile Traits Help Birds Outlive Dinosaurs?

News | Evolution

Differences in developmental timing may have given birds their big eyes, big brains and smaller size

Birds are the only dinosaurs that have survived into modern times. Why is that? Of all the dinosaur species, how did they manage to make it through the catastrophic events of 65 million years ago, whereas all their fellow dinos perished? A new study, published May 27 in Nature, hints at an evolutionary phenomenon that may have played to birds' advantage: They are, it seems, baby dinosaurs whose biology prevents them from ever growing up. (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.)

Bhart-Anjan Bhullar and his doctoral advisor, Arkhat Abzhanov, posit that birds may have evolved from dinosaurs by a process known as paedomorphosis, whereby an organism retains juvenile traits even after it becomes sexually mature. "They certainly look to have some paedomorphic characteristics," says Jack Horner, a Montana State University paleontologist who studies dinosaur growth and development and was not involved in the study. Paedomorphosis "is not uncommon in evolution and speciation," he adds.

Bhullar and Abzhanov reached this conclusion by comparing the skulls of birds and dinosaurs across phylogenies, or related groups, and at different developmental stages. To quantitatively compare cranial geometries, they scanned the skulls of theropod dinosaurs (which are thought to be birds' ancestors), crocodiles and alligators (dinosaurs' cousins), early transitional birds such as Archaeopteryx, and modern birds. Then they created digitized versions of each skull and mapped out cranial landmarks, such as nostril tips, eye socket dimensions and places where bones meet.

Their measurements showed that whereas a typical non-avian dinosaur began life with a round head, large eyes and a big brain (relative to the rest of the body) then later developed an elongated snout and smaller relative brain size, birds kept their baby faces.

If birds did evolve by paedomorphosis, they join species such as axolotls. These salamanders evolved to retain tadpolelike gills and fins and, unlike most other amphibians, remain aquatic into adulthood. This feature appears to be due to a hormone disruption. By adding thyroid hormone into their water, researchers have caused axolotls to metamorphose into terrestrial salamanders.

But why would it be advantageous for adult animals to look like kids? Greg Erickson, who studies evolutionary morphology at The Florida State University and was not involved in the study, says that paedomorphosis can help a species to develop new adaptations and exploit new niches. In particular, he suggests that paedomorphosis may have enabled birds to develop larger eyes, which aid in spatial assessment during flight as well as a high brain-to-body-mass ratio, which may contribute to intelligence.

An even simpler explanation is that kids are small and, in times of environmental stress, small is good. Bhullar cites an example of Temnospondyli?large primitive amphibians that were common before 120 million years ago. Catastrophic events killed off most of the temnospondyli, except for a few paedomorphic species. "The interesting thing to me is that [after the catastrophe] these little paedomorphic animals were at the base of a giant radiation," Bhullar says. He suggests that a similar phenomenon may have occurred during the catastrophic events that killed the dinosaurs?being small may have been an advantage, because smaller animals require less food and can more easily hide. "Everything that lived on land and weighed more than one kilogram perished," Bhullar says. "The only dinosaurs that survived were the paedomorphic ones." And after many of those larger species went extinct, the little dino may have been better placed to exploit the new niches that opened up.

Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Questions and Answers: Is Filing Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Right for You?

Filing for bankruptcy will show on your credit report for a period of 7 years. However, chapter 13 doesn?t affect FICO credit scores as seriously as chapter 7. This is because creditors will receive some of the money they are owed. Should the debtor reaffirm a debt (such as a car loan or mortgage), making punctual repayments will start to repair bad credit. Credit scores will start to improve relatively quickly within a couple of years. A poor credit history credit card can also help.

A Sort of President Awaits Egypt

CAIRO, May 26, 2012 (IPS) - Candidates competing in Egypt's first presidential election since Hosni Mubarak was ousted are vying for a prestigious position whose job description ? oddly enough ? has not yet been written. An unresolved dispute over who will write a new constitution for post-Mubarak Egypt has put the country in the unusual position of voting for a president with undefined authority.

"We still don?t know what responsibilities and powers the president will have," says Negad El-Borai, a rights lawyer and democracy activist. "(Rival parties) want to see how the election turns out before deciding on a constitution that will define the president?s role."

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) suspended Egypt?s last constitution after Mubarak was toppled during a popular uprising in February 2011. A constitutional declaration passed by a national referendum the following month was intended to serve as a stop-gap measure until a new charter could be written.

The declaration tasked Egypt?s elected parliament with forming a 100-member constituent assembly to draft a new constitution ahead of presidential elections. However, problems arose after the Islamist- dominated parliament stacked the assembly with conservatives, prompting many secular and liberal assembly members to pull out in protest.

In April, an administrative court suspended the constituent assembly on the grounds that the new body was unrepresentative of the public at large.

"The assembly was supposed to represent all segments of society," explains political science professor Mostafa Kamel El-Sayed, a former assembly member. "Instead it became weighed down with Islamists, who would have dominated the discourse at the exclusion of others."

In the absence of a new constitution, Egypt's next president will begin his tenure without any legal document to adequately define his authorities and responsibilities. Commentators warn that the situation could spark a power struggle between the predominantly Islamist parliament and the ruling military council ? with each side trying to carve out executive authorities.

"A president without a constitution is like a marriage without a contract," Mohamed Hassanein Heikal remarked during an interview to Al-Hayat satellite channel.

The veteran journalist argued that Egypt?s elections are pointless and illegitimate without a national charter to specify the president?s powers.

According to legal experts, the March 2011 constitutional declaration grants the SCAF executive authorities ? including the right to declare war ? until a new constitution is written. The would-be president is entitled to appoint or dismiss cabinet ministers, but does not have the right to ratify state policy or the state budget, or to introduce legislation. Those authorities lie with the parliament.

One of the main sources of contention among legislators is whether authority in Egypt should be centred on the parliament or the president. The last constitution, written in 1971 and amended over the decades, increasingly concentrated power in the presidency.

"Nobody wants another pharaoh," says 27-year-old Mohamed Mohieddin, who stood against Mubarak?s security forces during last year?s uprising. "We hope that the next constitution will have checks and balances to prevent Egypt from turning into another dictatorship."

Not surprisingly, Islamists, who hold about 70 percent of the parliament's seats, favour a parliamentary system in which most authority rests with the legislature, and the role of the president is largely ceremonial. Secular and liberal party leaders ? hoping to counterbalance the Islamist influence in politics ? have called for a presidential system, albeit with limits to executive power.

Both groups appear to be moving toward a consensus on a semi-presidential system like that of France, where a strong president is balanced by an empowered parliament. One proposal is that the president would be responsible for foreign affairs, while the parliament-appointed prime minister would handle domestic policy.

Another important debate is over the authority and privileges the new constitution will assign to the military, which has resisted calls for civilian oversight. Activists accuse the ruling generals of attempting to interfere in the constitution-writing process or impose binding legislation that would enshrine the privileges the military has enjoyed for over 60 years.

Concerns that the SCAF would find a way to dilute parliamentary powers appear to have motivated the Muslim Brotherhood, the country?s largest and oldest Islamic group, to field its own presidential candidate despite its promise to stay out of the race. The disqualification of their first candidate, prominent leader Khairat El-Shater, on the basis of an earlier political conviction during the Mubarak era, reinforced their suspicions that laws were being interpreted to serve a political end.

Similarly, fears that an Islamist might win the presidency may have prompted the generals to tacitly back the campaign of Ahmed Shafiq. The former air force commander, who served as Mubarak?s last prime minister, experienced an unexpected surge in popularity just days before the polls opened.

Opponents claim the presidential election committee ? headed by a former military judge ? has ignored allegations of illegal campaign spending and voter registration fraud. It has also overruled court rulings that disqualified Shafiq and other "feloul" (remnants of the old regime) from the presidential race.

Analysts say the showdown between the SCAF and the Muslim Brotherhood could ultimately determine who will write the constitution and what authority Egypt?s next president will wield.

"If Shafiq wins, expect the president to be granted broad powers, including the right to dissolve the parliament," says El-Borai, the rights lawyer.

The Muslim Brotherhood has also sought leverage. Earlier this month, parliamentary speaker Saad El- Katatni, secretary-general of the group?s political arm, announced that the committee charged with forming the constituent assembly would only resume on May 26, two days after the first presidential poll.

"The Muslim Brotherhood wants to wait and see the result of the presidential election before writing the constitution," argues El-Borai. "If their candidate wins, they will become the most important political power in Egypt and can negotiate with the SCAF from a position of power."

Preliminary results from the May 23-24 poll show Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed El-Morsy and presumed SCAF candidate Ahmed Shafiq received the most votes. The two candidates are expected to compete in a highly-polarised run-off next month, with the winner to be announced by Jun. 21.

The SCAF has promised to turn Egypt over to civilian rule by Jul. 1. Yet it could take months to draw up a constitution and put it before a popular referendum. Until then, the elected president could find himself at the centre of a political maelstrom. (END)

Keep your scholarship money in order - Richard the 3rd's Reference ...

It is completely necessary to get a load of scholarship information at the beginning of the year.

Sometimes it?s completely out of their hands and in the hands of the standards already set by the department of education. The federal money that flows to students has little to do with anyone else but you and your family. I figured that out rather quickly and ever since then I?ve tried to pay for my college with the knowledge I?ve obtained. I don?t think that students truly understand what they get into when they go to college. That?s why I think getting a college financial aid consultant isn?t necessary.?

Florida: Mystery sponge-killing disease now seen from Palm Beach to lower Keys

From Sombrero Reef down in the Keys to the waters of West Palm Beach, red barrel sponges are disintegrating at worrisome rates. The culprit is?unknown, and state scientists are busy trying to figure out just how widespread the disease outbreak is.At the end of April, Ed Tichenor of Palm Beach County Reef Rescue first observed sponges?disintegrating. By the first week of May, he confirmed that the sponges, an animal, were dying from Breakers Reef in Palm Beach south to at least Delray Beach.?

Now, officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirm with New Times that similar observations have been made in waters off Broward, Key Biscayne, and the Florida Keys.?

"We are trying to get a handle on the extent of how widespread the disease outbreak is right now," says Rob Ruzicka, program manager at the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute. "As far as we can tell, this is the largest event we've seen so far, at least in Florida."

It's unclear what's actually killing the sponges. Scientists have dubbed the syndrome Sponge Orange Band, which only describes the symptoms, but they haven't been able to confirm the actual pathogen?responsible.??

"It's totally possible that whatever is causing the disease here could spread to the rest of the Caribbean in a matter of months or a year," Ruzicka says. "We might just be witnessing the very early stages of something larger... We need to find out if it's a widespread pandemic and, if so, how much of the sponge population it is affecting."

Another aspect researchers are trying to determine is?whether?the phenomenon?has moved south toward the Keys or north along the reef tract. ??

"Typically, you look up-current," says Tichenor of Palm Beach County Reef Rescue. "I'm suggesting that we need to look at what's coming out of the Gulf of Mexico."

Tichenor says the first step should be to conduct what's called a PAH analysis, a test to?determine?if polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are in the water. Strong pollutants, PAHs are present in crude-oil?deposits, among other things.?

"If this is a containment, I think sponges are likely the first organism to be impacted because they're filtering the water. That's what they do," Tichenor says. "It seems that whatever they're filtering out of the water is killing them. The question now is what's in the water."

Ruzicka and state officials will be heading to the Dry Tortugas to inspect the waters in the coming weeks, and they'll be checking back on the upper and lower Keys through June and July. Tichenor will continue to monitor the local waters.

Community Voices: Nostalgic for days gone by

Posted: Saturday, May 26, 2012 12:00 pm | Updated: 11:14 am, Fri May 25, 2012.

I become nostalgic about certain periods of my life. This is common in my generation and in pretty much all generations at some point.

I am working on my seventh decade, which has me looking back to some very eventful years in our world. In my life, there have been four major conflicts that have taken at least four different generations to foreign lands to fight. We never truly won any of those conflicts and I have no desire to go back to any of those days.

There have been 10 recessions during my lifetime. While some of them were short lived (one year), all of them injured the working class in this nation. However, the current Great Recession is the longest since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

When I was growing up years ago and working for 90 cents an hour, I was oblivious to most of the economic problems of the ?50s and ?60s, and some portions of the ?70s and ?80s. Since taking on the duties of becoming a husband and a father, I have experienced the full force of the downturns of the ?90s, 2000s and 2010s. Granted, I have enjoyed some prosperous days; however, I am not sure that I want to experience the pain of a recession so that I can enjoy the fleeting feeling of elation associated with prosperous days.

There have been 12 presidents since I was born; six democrats and six republicans. During that time we have had three crises in office. One president was assassinated, one resigned due to scandal and one went through an impeachment process. I wish I could forget how distressing these very visible national events were to me and to our nation as a whole. I definitely would not want to go back to those days.

But here is a short list of the things for which I am nostalgic:

1. A day when corporations were not citizens

2. A day when the next generation was considered in fiscal policy

3. A day when our national reputation was less soiled

4. A day when debt was not the basis for our national prosperity

5. A day when compromise was not considered to be a four letter word

6. A day when we were unified to do great things like in the cases of the space race and development of a national highway system

7. A day when our leaders could really lead

8. A day of great vision ? maybe just living out the vision of our nation?s founders: the land of the free and the home of the brave

In the end, I want to help create a better day for my children and grandchildren. I am looking for women and men of vision and courage, and I plan to follow them.

Rangers crush M's behind Cruz's 8 RBI

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:03 a.m. ET May 26, 2012

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Nelson Cruz helped the Texas Rangers bust out of their offensive funk in a big way.

Cruz hit a grand slam and tied his career high with eight RBIs, Josh Hamilton hit his 19th home run of the season and the Rangers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 14-3 Friday night.

The Rangers are the top-scoring team in baseball despite averaging 3.5 runs over their previous 10 games. Texas was held to seven runs in dropping two of three to Seattle earlier in the week.

Cruz had a three-run double in a six-run first, then capped his big night with a 414-foot grand slam that landed in the upper deck of in right.

"You dream to have those kinds of days," said Cruz, who also had an RBI single in the sixth and went 4 for 5. "It can't happen every day. When it happens, you should be happy and enjoy it."

Cruz also drove in eight runs against Toronto on July 22, 2011. His grand slam in the seventh was the fourth of his career and second of the season.

Cruz is the sixth players in Rangers history to drive in eight or more runs in a game. Ivan Rodriguez has the Rangers team record with nine on April 13, 1999 against Seattle.

"Some guys work hard to get to get that many RBIs in one month," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "(Cruz) did it one night. That's what he's capable of doing."

Toronto starter Brandon Morrow (5-3) was knocked out after recording just two outs in the first. The right-hander, who had two shutouts in his previous four starts, gave up six runs and five hits in the shortest start of his career.

The Blue Jays used four relievers which included backup catcher Jeff Mathis, who pitched for the first time since he was in high school.

Mathis pitched a scoreless eighth, becoming the sixth position player in Toronto history to pitch.

"The biggest part was running in from the bullpen," Mathis said. "That was real weird."

Derek Holland (4-3) struck out a season-high nine in 7 1-3 innings. He allowed two runs and five hits.

Hamilton, who leads the majors in home runs, had gone 11 games without a homer before leading off the second with his first since May 12. He left the game in the seventh inning with a head cold.

Yorvit Torrealba added his first home run, and Adrian Beltre and Michael Young each had three hits. The Rangers finished with 18 hits.

"It was nice to break out like this," Texas second baseman Ian Kinsler said.

Edwin Encarnacion hit his 15th home run of the season for the Blue Jays, who have lost three in a row.

Morrow threw 44 pitches in the first inning and faced 10 batters before he was relieved by Carlos Villanueva.

Beltre had a two-run single and Cruz's bases-loaded double gave the Rangers a 5-0 lead.

Mitch Moreland's RBI single capped the scoring in the first, and Morrow was relieved one batter later after Kinsler doubled to center.

In four other road starts this season, Morrow had given up two earned runs in 28 2-3 innings.

"I'm just going to pretend that that game never happened," said Morrow, who cut off his postgame interview after taking only one question.

Mathis was the fifth Blue Jays pitcher of the game - and the only one to not give up a run. He allowed a double and a walk in the eighth. Alberto Gonzalez flew out to end the eighth.

Hamilton's home run leading off the second landed in the second deck in right and gave him 50 RBIs this season. He became first player in club history to hit 19 home runs in the team's 46 games of the season.

NOTES: Mathis was the first Blue Jays position player to pitch since Mike McCoy last June 11. ... Rangers C Mike Napoli was held out of the lineup with an upset stomach. ... Hamilton tied the club record with his 10th home run in May. ... Toronto 2B Kelly Johnson singled in the third to reach base in his 19th straight game. ... Pro golfer Jason Dufner threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Dufner leads the Colonial, which is being played in nearby Fort Worth, after two rounds.

Educational Leadership:Meeting Students Where They Are:Why Teachers Should Try Twitter

William M. Ferriter

I've got an embarrassing confession to make: Until recently, I wasn't convinced that differentiating learning opportunities for students really mattered. Like many teachers, I would deliver one lesson each day, keeping my fingers crossed that I met everyone's needs. And even though I've always had a sense for the strengths and weaknesses of my individual students, I rarely drew on that knowledge to make specific changes in instruction or assignments.

The primary reason for my inability to embrace differentiation as a teacher was that, until recently, I'd never experienced differentiation as a learner. Like most practitioners, I've spent too much professional development time sitting in lectures delivered to entire faculties. No one offered preassessments, tiered lessons, or learning contracts to my colleagues or me. Instead, we plodded through courses designed to meet the needs of the majority. In fact, the structure of professional development programs in most schools sends conflicting messages about the importance of meeting learners where they are.

Differentiation has grown on me in the past 18 months, though, thanks to my experiences using the online networking tool Twitter. Twitter makes it easy to post short (140-character maximum), public, text-based messages to the Web?messages that any interested follower can see and respond to.

Although many Twitter users post personal messages that might be described as "digital noise" (such as "Having Chinese takeout for dinner"), teaching professionals have found ways to use Twitter to share resources and lend quick support to peers with similar interests. For educators who use this tool to build a network of people whose Twitter messages connect to their work, Twitter becomes a constant source of new ideas to explore.

Finding Someone to "Follow"

I began my work with Twitter by creating a free account, which anyone with an Internet connection can do by visiting http://twitter.com. I then started following the updates of Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach (@snbeach), a Teacher Leaders Network colleague and digital learning expert. Each time I signed into Twitter, I'd automatically see any thoughts that Sheryl had posted, sometimes including links to articles she was reading.

Although Sheryl's messages were not intended for me alone?all of her Twitter followers could see her posts?most were valuable to me because Sheryl and I are both interested in the changing nature of learning in the 21st century. We each study the kinds of skills students will need to be successful in tomorrow's world and the ways digital tools can facilitate meaningful experiences in today's classrooms. Exploring her Twitter posts challenged my thinking and led me to great resources without having to spend hours searching. Even as my Twitter network has grown, Sheryl's posts continue to help me. Just today, she shared a link to a collection of resources on teaching second languages that I can't wait to explore (http://www.onlineuniversities.com/blog/2009/11/100-tips-tools-to-teach-your-child-a-second-language).

Next, I started following the Twitter messages shared by many of the creative educators I found on the Twitter4Teachers wiki (http://twitter4teachers.pbworks.com), seeking the same kinds of people I like to exchange ideas with in real life. I focused on finding middle school language arts and social studies teachers or teachers interested in technology, knowing that people with my interests were likely to point me toward resources I could use.

I also followed Twitter users who were recommended by digital peers or whom I knew in person. Each of their updates appeared automatically on my Twitter homepage. I could look inside the minds of motivated peers to learn about the new projects they were undertaking, the research reports they were studying, and Web sites they were exploring. As my comfort with Twitter grew?a process that took a few months, as is typical for new users?I became an active contributor to this knowledge network.

I'm constantly jazzed by my Twitter network because I have easy access to a stream of customized information and ideas that motivate me?one characteristic of differentiated learning. This information is customized because I follow only Twitter posters who discuss topics I'm eager to learn about. Although I can't read every message generated by the 200 education professionals whose updates I now follow, I skim through posts for 20 minutes each morning and afternoon.

Using the Reply and Direct Message options, I join conversations with individual members of this digital community, offering suggestions, asking questions, and celebrating successes. As with most digital conversations, I can either make my replies visible to everyone who's following my updates or target private replies to certain individuals.

I now turn to Twitter friends for help in the same way that I turn to the teachers on my hallway. Recently, a friend in my Twitter feed pointed me to a great strategy for structuring classroom discussions, a practice I'd been struggling with (http://angelacunningham.wordpress.com/2009/05/teaching-students-to-dialogue.html).

Opportunities for Customization

What lessons have I learned from Twitter? First, I finally understand how much differentiated learning matters. My own motivation levels have skyrocketed, I'm accessing ideas connected to my professional interests, and I've taken ownership of my own learning.

This has me convinced that we can use digital tools to differentiate learning for students, too. Although Twitter may not be appropriate in all situations? elementary students would struggle to build meaningful networks of peers, and schools would have to actively address Internet safety?it's being used successfully by several inventive high school teachers. Shelly Blake-Plock, for example, a Maryland Latin and art history teacher, is integrating Twitter into research, discussion, and vocabulary work in his classroom. Blake-Plock shares ideas on using Twitter in the classroom in this entry on his blog, Teach Paperless: http://teachpaperless.blogspot.com/2009/05/best-practices-in-twitter-enhanced-high.html.

Teachers must identify how applications like Twitter can facilitate their learning. Digital opportunities to connect with new content and communities can accelerate learning for every student?but only after teachers become efficient digital learners, too.

Mediocrity Allergies ? FUNCTIONAL FITNESS ON THE BLUFFS

The Latin phrase ?Res Firma Mitescre Mescit? translates to ?a firm resolve does not know how to weaken.? Other, more literal, translations describe the phrase as ?once you?ve got it up, keep it up.? This concept, depending how you apply it, may have unmeasurable importance for the context of your training.

This idea that ?a strong thing cannot weaken? brings to mind the dynamic that occurs inside the living, breathing community at Functional Fitness on the Bluffs. Our students are hardening. Yes, there bodies are changing, literally from the inside out, but I mean they, the people, are changing.

Ariel building immunity to weakness.

Exposing one?s self to training like this, and the adversity comes with it, builds a certain resolve. That resolve is solidified when students live a lifestyle that says, ?I will show up. I will find a way to tackle the task at hand, no matter what.?

The changes that occur inside of folks that commit to this include the very concept that the Latin phrase above describes. Living a life of positivity, health, fitness, and growth not only brings positivity, health, fitness, and growth, but it also deters from the destruction of those things. It?s harder to succumb to failure and negativity once ?you?ve got it up.?

Res Firma Mitescre Mescit?with regards to fitness means to build up immunity to poor habits. Live inside of health and wellness. Become allergic to failure.

Tom Byun of Yahoo! Small Business: Solutions For The Overwhelmed

It?s no secret, many small business owners are overwhelmed. If that sounds like you, you?re not alone. Too much to do, too many choices, too little time, not enough money. Wouldn?t it be great if you could have one central place to manage tools that was cost efficient while providing time savings as well? Look no further. Tom Byun, Vice President & General Manager of Yahoo! Small Business, joins Brent Leary to provide a solution.

* * * * *

Tom Byun of Yahoo! Small BusinessSmall Business Trends:? Can you tell us what small business means to Yahoo! and give us your impression of Small Business Week and its importance?

Tom Byun:? We are obviously very excited about Small Business Week.? To first answer your question about what small business means to Yahoo!, it is a critical, core part of our strategy and mission to continue to provide relevant news, content and information to consumer audience.

You know, the thing about Yahoo! ? it is not a well known stat but, we have? nearly ten million small businesses, plus what we call intenders ? people that may be aspiring entrepreneurs ? visiting and consuming a variety of our services. ?They are a very important audience for Yahoo!

The business unit I manage is to service those customers and provide them with lead sources and tools to help them grow and manage their business on line.

To your second question about what Small Business Week means for me, overall I think small businesses are really the life blood and engine of growth for this economy.? I don?t need to mention all of the stats you and your readers know about how many people small businesses employ. ?And the type of services and growth they provide for the economy. ?They are a crucial part. ?I think Small Businesses Week is a great vehicle and means by which more and more awareness for small business is created.

Small Business Trends:? What are some of the main issues you are hearing from your customers about the challenges of marketing from a small business perspective?

Tom Byun:? I have spent a lot of time with customers day to day, as well as working with customer research focus groups that are set up. ?There are a couple of things that we hear:

  • One, they are very pressed for time and are focusing on bringing their next sale and the next foot in the door, or traffic to their website.
  • Two, they are inundated with calls or requests for a variety of different services. ?Whether it is someone who wants to sell them a customer list, they are just inundated and overwhelmed, not sure of which services to use.

Often times they?re also overwhelmed with having to use a variety of tools and not having it in one central place for them to manage in a way that is not only cost efficient but, also give them time savings.

Those are some of the pain points that we have heard from customers. ?I think one of the trends we are seeing is more and more small businesses moving a lot of their marketing dollars online. ?But they are not sure which resources are cost effective and drive the best ROI.

Small Business Trends:? Can you tell us a about the Marketing Dashboard you recently released?

Tom Byun:? Sure. ?The Marketing Dashboard we launched a few weeks ago is a free tool that helps businesses, entrepreneurs and all types starting with small businesses discover new marketing opportunities to grow their business. ?How to get that additional sale. ?How to get the word out, build awareness and get a more transparent and clear picture of their marketing campaign results.

As I mentioned, it is a free tool. ?But for a small nominal fee, they can get a much more robust set of features to help them manage marketing campaigns all in one place.

Small Business Trends:? You have some services integrated into the dashboard. ?Constant Contact for email marketing, Orange Soda for SEM/SEO and Google Analytics for analytics?

Tom Byun:? One thing we did as part of the research in talking with small businesses is understand, ?When I am business today, and think through all of the different services that I am looking at to grow and market myself, what is at the top of the list?? ?There are a few things that come to the top and based on that, we talked to a number of different potential partners out there.

Email marketing is near the top of the list and Constant Contact is someone that we decided to partner with because they are already a proven, strong branded player. ?Then, as you eluded to SEM and SEO, we decided that a managed SEM and SEO approach is a cost effective way. ?It is the right approach because again, small businesses do not have a lot of time in the day. ?So we partnered with Orange Soda.

Now there are other services. ?For example, local directory listing management and online reputation management that we also are offering as part of the service.? The local directory listing management covers over a hundred sites. ?Then, online reputation management we pull from up to eight thousand different sources. ?And then, as you mentioned, site traffic analysis is with Google Analytics.

Small Business Trends:? Can you talk a little bit about marketing initiatives and their impact on a company?s reputation online?

Tom Byun:??Definitely. ?You know, especially with the growing voices and opinions from consumers, it is really important that you stay abreast of what is being said and how to respond to it.

In the dashboard, we have integrated a reputation tracker. ?You can look at how many reviews in terms of mentions you have gotten, how many reviews this month, and there is a distribution of ratings ? whether it is positive, negative or neutral.

One other I will call out, and this gets added as part of the paid upgrade feature, is being able to understand and track what is being said by your competitors near you.? Just having a pulse on that and the voice of the customer is really important. ?Once they have information at their fingertips, it can help them improve the overall customer experience. ?I think this will be a valuable tool.

Small Business Trends:? Where can people learn more?

'Ring of Fire' eclipse delights millions in Asia, US (+video)

A solar eclipse was visible to millions Sunday when the moon hid the sun, creating a 'ring of fire.' It was the first annular eclipse seen in Japan since 1839, and it was broadcast live on TV.

From a park near Albuquerque, to the top of Japan's Mount Fuji, to the California coast the effect was dramatic: The moon nearly blotting out the sun creating a blazing "ring of fire" eclipse.

Millions of people across a narrow strip of eastern Asia and the Western U.S. turned their sights skyward for the annular eclipse, in which the moon passes in front of the sun leaving only a golden ring around its edges.

The rare lunar-solar alignment was visible in Asia early Monday before it moved across the Pacific ? and the international dateline ? where it was seen in parts of the western United States late Sunday afternoon.

People from Colorado, Oklahoma and as far away as Canada traveled to Albuquerque to enjoy one of the best vantage points at a park on the edge of the city.

Members of the crowd smiled and cheered and children yelled with excitement as the moon crossed the sun and the blazing halo of light began to form. Some watched the eclipse by placing their viewing glasses on the front of their smartphones.

Eventually, the moon centered and covered about 96 percent of the sun.

"That's got to be the prettiest thing I've ever seen," said Brent Veltri of Salida, Colorado.

Elsewhere, viewing parties were held at observatories in Reno, Nevada, and Oakland, California, while skywatchers gathered in coastal and forest counties in California. In some areas, special camera filters for taking photographs have been sold out for weeks in anticipation of the big event.

The eclipse was broadcast live on TV in Tokyo, where such an eclipse hasn't been visible since 1839. Japanese TV crews watched from the top of Mount Fuji and even staked out a zoo south of Tokyo to capture the reaction of the chimpanzees ? who didn't seem to notice.

Eclipse tours were arranged in Japan at schools and parks, on pleasure boats and even private airplanes. Similar events were held in China and Taiwan as well, with skywatchers warned to protect their eyes.

A light rain fell on Tokyo as the eclipse began, but the clouds thinned as it reached its peak, providing near perfect conditions.
