If you've upgraded your Mac to OS X Mavericks, you've got iCloud Keychain built right into Safari now. This means you can auto-generate passwords for any website or service that supports the feature. iCloud Keychain will then sync your generate passwords between all your Macs and iOS devices so you don't even have to remember them any longer. Most importantly, having strong and differentiated passwords is more secure as well. Here's how to generate a password in OS X Mavericks:
Before continuing, be aware that a lot of sites don't yet recognize iCloud Keychain's password generation feature or don't allow the saving of passwords. If you get an error like below, you aren't doing anything wrong, that site just doesn't allow password generation, so you'll have to create your own and simply save it to iCloud Keychain manually.
- Launch Safari on your Mac running OS X Mavericks.
- Navigate to the website you'd like to create a login for or change the password for.
- Once you're in a password field, you will see a popup from iCloud Keychain suggesting a strong password for you.
- Click on Use Safari suggested password.
- Finish filling out anything you need to and save your changes.
That's all there is to it. iCloud Keychain will now sync the new password across all your iPhones, iPads, and Macs for use on any of them.
